Chapter 1

Michael Mell leaned against the door of the car looking out of the window. The drive on the backroads through the green forest would be tranquil and soothing if the teenager hadn't known the destination.

"Conversion camp?!" Jeremy asked questioningly as well as shocked. Michael stayed quiet as his gaze drifted to the side, Jeremy followed his gaze that led to the sleeve of Michael's red patched hoodie.

His pride flag was ripped from its place and all that was left was a faded bare spot where the memory once was.

Michael cringed as he heard his friend gasp, he was ready to be bombarded with relentless questions about what happened. He decided he'd save himself the trouble.

"My dad finally came home after being gone for a year..." he paused and made eye contact with Jeremy, he felt his heart beating faster and looked back down to avoid nervously stuttering, "he saw the patch and it didn't go well..." Michael finished, feeling his newly formed bruises pulse at the memory.

The hooded boy was engulfed in a tight hug, he heard sniffles and choked back sobs from his friend.

"I shouldn't have shown you this..." Michael pauses and sighs, "especially right before you come out to your own dad.."

Michael shook his head from the thought, he kept listening to the lyrics of the song blasting through the white headphones that laid on his head to avoid the hateful words that spilled from his dad's mouth. He bobbed his head to the music–to add emphasis to his dad that he wasn't listening–and thought of his friend Jeremy again.

The boy fell in love with his best friend as cliché as it was. Jeremy had that face, something so beautiful Michael couldn't pinpoint exactly what was so beautiful about it. He wished he could tell Jeremy that he loved him before he was sent to this 'Camp' and be forced to be in the closet for the rest of his life.

The car suddenly stopped and Michael sat straight and looked out the window with an obvious scowl. There was a gate adorned in protest signs to homosexual marriage, (despite it already being legal) flags with red exes over the rainbow, and spiritual yet homophobic bullshit written on the walls.

Michael's door suddenly opened as a young pale man stood there looking michael up and down, his face contorted in disgust as Michael's father told the man that he was 'ill' and 'wrong'.

Michael felt a sudden surge of anger and stuck his tongue out at the man. The stranger scoffed and walked ahead, Michael's father forced him out of the car and followed the stranger. They had a conversation about how at the end of the given time period Michael would be 'converted'. Mike was gritting his teeth at the thought of being something he wasn't.

He knew what he'd have to do while he was here. He knew he would have to disobey the orders, be uncooperative with the 'therapy'.

He would resist.
