Meeting you

*Kyle*

I remember the day that I met him like it was just yesterday that I crossed paths with him. That day was like any other day, it was cloudy and windy. I was heading to school with my mom when I spotted him. He was short, an inch or so shorter than me, with light brown hair. I couldn't see him clearly as he was in the car beside my mom's so all I could see was his bright raincoat. He was reading something as he had his head lowered. We were at a red light which was a good thing. I was so entranced with watching him that I didn't notice that he had looked up from whatever it was that he was looking at and I saw a blush cover his light skin.

I could see just how pretty he was, but boys can't be pretty right? At least that's what my dad had said when I was younger, but anyway, I saw that he had bright hazel eyes and a cute button nose making him even cuter. I looked away as I felt my cheeks get hot, but before I did I saw a small smile cross his lips. I was 7 at that time meaning that I was only in first grade. Once the traffic light switched mom began driving away and I noticed that the car beside ours, the boy I had seen earlier, was driving in the same direction before they got behind our car.

I remember looking back and seeing a young woman, about mom's age or younger with dark curly hair and gray eyes. She was talking to him because she kept looking over at him with a smile on her face. I sat back in my seat and just waited until mom got to school. Once we did, mom parked the park in front of the school entrance

"Have fun at school sweetie" she had said after walking me to my classroom, planting a kiss on my forehead

"By mommy" I had replied before I walked into my classroom, I beamed when I spotted my best friend in the whole wide world, I was only a 7 year old so at that time I thought he was but turned out that he wasn't, and walked over to him and sat on the chair next to him.

"Hi Kyle" he beamed after he had spotted me seating beside him

"Hi, JJ" I replied and from then we talked about what we had done over the weekend, he had said that he and his older brother had gone to that new arcade in town and then he and his parents went to the park, while I told him that my dad and I had gone fishing and then went to Six Flags with my mom and three older siblings. I had a big sister named Sophia, and two brothers named Jaxon and Ryan. We talked until the teacher announced that we were having a new student

"Settle down kids, we have a new student joining us today," Miss Lily said and the class quieted down and looked over to her and I noticed that it was the same boy that I had seen on the way to school. He was looking down at the ground with a faint blush on his cheeks.

"Kids, this is Rain" Miss Lily said and I heard a few kids giggle and others say mean things which made the teacher upset

"There will be no name-calling or finger-pointing in this class. If I ever see or hear that you were being mean to Rain, I will call your parents and inform them about your behavior and also keep you behind for recess am I understood?" she said and the kids that had made fun of him stopped and nodded their heads. She turned to the boy, Rain, and did these weird hand gestures to him and I saw him do the same while nodding his head. He looked up and his eyes lit up when he spotted me and I smiled but I heard JJ say

"What a loser" under his breath and I looked at him glaring

"He's not a loser JJ" I hissed

"Yes he is Kyle" he retorted and I frowned and shook my head, JJ was being mean, and I didn't know why. The class went by quickly and before I knew it was already time to go to lunch, so I gathered my things up and put them inside my desk before lining up with the others, I furrowed my brows when I noticed that Rain wasn't in line with us so I turned around and saw him sitting down on his seat with his head down. I pursed my lips before walking out of line only to get my arm grabbed and I looked over to see that it was Henry, another friend of my mine

"Where are you going?" he asked with his head cocked to the side

"To get Rain" I replied and he nodded letting my arm go

"Hi," I said once I stopped at his seat but frowned when he didn't lookup

"Hi" I repeated but still, nothing happened, I sighed and poked him making Rain jump, his wide hazel eyes looked up at me and confusion swam in them

"We have lunch," I said and he frowned and tilted his head to the side. I pointed to the line that was leaving the room and he looked over before scrambling from his seat and rushing out but only to stop to look over at me. I smiled and walked over to him and grabbed his hand, and pulled him towards the lunchroom. I was still confused as to why he didn't reply back to me earlier and why he and Miss Lily were doing those weird hand movements earlier.

"Kyle where we-oh" I heard Miss Lily say before cutting off and looking relieved when she saw Rain standing beside me and once again she was doing those hand movements with him and I tilted my head to the side

"Miss Lily?" I had asked and she looked over at me

"Yes, Kyle?"

"What are you doing?"

"Signing Kyle" she answered and I furrowed my brows

"What's that?"

"It's when you communicate with someone who's deaf Kyle"

"And what does that mean, Miss Lily?" I asked

"It's when a person can't hear" was her reply and I made an 'o' shape with my mouth so that's why he couldn't reply? Now I feel bad.

A few days later, during recess were when it happened, that it happened, the day that I became best friends with Rain. I was just coming out finishing my classwork when I saw it. At first, I was too shocked to even do anything, but once my brain caught up to what was happening I was running towards them and pushing JJ off of Rain. That was the day that I lost JJ as a friend and gained Rain as one. I don't know why JJ had Rain pinned to the ground and punching him well that was until I had asked Henry since I couldn't ask Rain why. I got in trouble, Miss Lily had called my parents and told them that she had caught me fighting with JJ and they were quite upset since they had told me that I was grounded for a week with no TV and no games, but that changed after I told them why I had punched JJ.

Miss Lily was shocked to hear that JJ had pushed Rain because he didn't get off the swing that he had been sitting on. She called JJ's parents and they were not happy to hear that their son was in trouble and even angrier when they found out the reason why he was in trouble. After that JJ and I returned to Miss Lily's class with her and she changed JJ and Rain's seats. I felt something poke my arm and I frowned and looked over to Rain as he handed me a piece of paper and in messy handwriting, I saw the words

Thank you for defending me, but you didn't have to. I shook my head with a smile and replied

You're welcome and I would do it again if I have to, I don't like people being mean to others. I didn't like seeing JJ hurting you, no one is going to hurt you again, I promise

Why?

Because you're my friend, Rain, and friends don't let friends get hurt

I'm your friend?

Mhm, unless you don't want to that's ok with me too but I still won't let anyone hurt you

Oh, I'm sorry if I sounded mean, I'd like to be your friend, Kyle, you're nice not like JJ

Oh, well don't worry about JJ anymore because he won't get near you again that was the day that Rain and I became inseparable, we did everything together from that they forward, he even taught me to sign which was cool because now I could communicate with him better but he also liked writing to each other during class when Miss Lily wasn't looking. Mom and Dad were so happy when they learned that I had befriended Rain saying that I was a good example to others I was confused but didn't say anything instead I just smiled at them. Little did I know that my friendship with Rain would change over the years and how my promise of no one hurting him would be broken.
