A New Family

By the time we reached the Manhattan newsies house it was completely dark. "Here's where we call home" jack said as he opened the door.

"Heya cowboy!" A few of the boys called out. Most of the boys I didn't recognize but I couple I had seen in the square earlier.

"Heya boys. This squeak. He's new here" Jack announced

Boys surrounded me laughing an introducing themselves. Race, mush, kid blink, crutchy, specs, buttons, and boots were just a few of the names. Seems everyone has a nickname here.

Crutchy stood out to me the most. He walked with a crutch, hense the nickname, and had an irrisitable smile. I smiled back at him as he smiled at me. I could tell we would be good friends.

Race stood out as well. He was tall and lean with a strong jawline. He had a lopsided grin that just couldn't be ignored. I grinned back at him.

"Showas back there and yous can have one of the bunks ova there" jack said before heading off.

I nodded, heading towards the shower. Seems that everyone else had already bathed, so I didn't have to worry much. As I undressed I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Long white scars danced down my back, a gift from the Delancey brothers. Sometimes I swore I could feel them sting, and I ever had nightmare about them. I sighed heavily, no one will be abke to treat me like that ever again.

I showered quickly and rebound my chest shoving my hair back into my hat.

Just as I finished I heard jack yell "dinner boys!" And everyone rush into another room. I headed over with the crowd and everyone grabbed some soup and a piece if bread.

The boys talked and laughed happily as I joined them, hoping things could stay this perfect forever.
