"Kayla, wait up," Jack shouted, trying to keep up with the curly-haired woman as she power-walked down the hall. She sped up to a jog as she made her way across the sky bridge and headed up the stairs to Dr. Brooks's lab, where Cynthia and Ethan had been assigned to work for the day. It was a pretty far trek and during the walk over, Kayla only began to feel more and more enraged.
She burst through the door to the lab and looked around, focusing in on the petite Asian woman who was pipetting fluids into a Petri dish in the far corner. Luckily, it appeared that Dr. Brooks was not in the lab.
"Hey Kayla," Ethan smiled when he turned to see it was she who had entered the room.
"What the fuck, Cynthia?" Kayla snapped, ignoring him as she approached Cynthia.
"Oh... you," Cynthia said, looking up from the Petri Dish. She put down the pipette and stepped out from behind the lab bench.
Ethan looked back and forth between the two women, sensing the tension between them.
"What do you want?" Cynthia said, crossing her arms.
"Why would you tell Dr. Cooper that I got to scrub into Christian's surgery because Dr. Holland said so. You were there. You know that's not how it happened. I beat you, fair and square."
"The only thing I know is that you're sleeping with an attending. Seems to me like an unfair advantage... and Dr. Cooper seemed to think so too," Cynthia smirked.
"Wow," Kayla shook her head. "Is it really that hard for you to believe that maybe I'm just smarter than you? Maybe I'm just better than you? I mean, God, Cynthia you're really that threatened by me that you would go out of your way to lie to get me thrown out of the program? That's pathetic."
"What's pathetic is you whoring yourself out for surgeries like some-"
Before Cynthia could even get her sentence out, Kayla clenched her hand into a fist. She was about to lift it, fully intending to knock Cynthia out cold, but a hand firmly grabbed her wrist before she could go through with it.
Cynthia fell silent, gazing past her, Kayla presumed at whoever it was who had a tight grasp on her wrist.
Kayla turned slowly, expecting to see that the hand that grabbed her belonged Ethan or Dr. Brooks, and began to instantly regret her impulse to hit the girl. And though she had barely moved her fist an inch, she was sure in that moment that her career was over.
She looked up and was surprised to see that it was Jack who was holding her wrist. She hadn't heard him come in.
"Dr. Kavari," he said sternly, looking into her eyes. He seemed to know exactly what she had been about to do and he did not look happy about it.
Then he looked over Cynthia. "What's going on here?"
Cynthia was quiet, looking at Jack apprehensively. Her entire demeanor was changed. Her facial expression had changed from combative to docile quicker than the speed of light.
"They were just having a bit of a disagreement is all," Ethan said from where he stood by tissue sample refrigerator.
Everyone turned to look at him.
"Right... what he said," Cynthia said, quietly.
"I - yeah actually I was just leaving," Kayla said, glaring at Cynthia before storming out of the lab. Jack followed her out.
"Kayla what the hell was that? Tell me you weren't going to hit her!" he demanded.
"Did you hear what she said?"
