THE DAY HAD DRAGGED ON for what felt like days. Luckily, not every class was as bad as Mallory's first period. Sometimes she had Phoebe and Allison on either sides of her. Sometimes, the only open seat was as far away from her as possible. Other times, though, she had no friends in the class and three open seats around her. She hated algebra. She hated algebra so, so much.

Yet, the day was done, and she now sat outside Hawkins's middle school, waiting for Debbie to come out. Kids were piling out, some running, some talking to friends. Mallory knew Debbie was good pals—but not close enough to know about the events that had happened last year—with Will Byers, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair, so she naturally expected her to be skipping out with them and talking animatedly about something nerdy. What she didn't expect was for Debbie to come out with a red-headed girl, hold a skateboard. Mallory went up to her little sister.

"Hey, Deb! Who's this?" It wasn't accusatory, just a hit of mild interest. Debbie whipped around and smiled at her older sister, jumping up to give the high schooler a bear hug.

"Oh, Mallory, this is just my new friend. Her name is Maxine but nobody calls her that. They all call her Max. Like me!" It was quite a funny sight. Debbie was dressed up with a red bow pinned in place on the back of her head while wearing a nice shirt with a pleated skirt. She looked like a totally girly-girl and that's exactly how Debbie liked it. Max, on the other hand, had on baggy jeans and a zip-up. A complete tomboy. The couple was indeed odd.

"That's so cool! Are you going to invite her to the arcade?" Mallory basically invited her but still acted as if Debbie had power in this situation. Debbie's face lit up as if she had never even thought of it.

"Good idea! Hey, Max, wanna go to the arcade later?" The girl's continued to talk but Mallory had become distracted. Loud rock music began to play. Her eyes at some point we're going to get stuck in the back of her head but she couldn't help but roll her eyes again.

"You ready?" Mallory just wanted to get out of there as quick as possible.

Mallory's blood boiled each time the bass boomed and blared brutally. This school didn't need another pre-Nancy-Wheeler Steve Harrington. She knew she needed to stop him from being, well, himself.

But how? She didn't want to give Billy the attention he wanted, so what was there to do? Just ignore him? Mallory decided that was her best bet.

"Almost, Mal! Take a chill pill!" The young girl groaned, continuing to converse with her newfound friend. All Mallory could do was glare at the car and ball her fists. She dug her nails into her skin so harshly that she almost drew a little blood. Why was this guy getting under her skin so much?

Finally, Debbie snagged Mallory's wrist. Apparently, Debbie had seen the fists and knew not to hold hands with her older sister like they always do. She waved to Maxine.
