ella woke up to the loudest knock on her door. before that, elliot had been knocking softly for minutes. ella moaned, picking herself off the bed, and recollected the strength to get up and open the goddamn door.
"surprise," elliot smiled.
"it's not a surprise you idiot, i knew you were coming," she smiled back at him, embracing him into a hug.
"nice to know you still care about me," elliot mocks.
"elliot, why did you need to come?" ella asked softly.
"the story about michael was too much for me to just tell you over the phone."
"the story of michael?"
"yeah, there's more to him than what i told you."
"well, what else is there?"
elliot took a deep breath, setting down his things. "michael gordon clifford. died three years ago, and would be twenty one this year. it was a murder but the case was closed after four months of nothing. i told you he was your childhood best friend, and that was true. you too were inseparable; same for me and his sister, michelle."
"didn't you visit michelle last time you were here?"
"yeah, i would've brought you with me but you didn't know the story."
"that's the thing, elliot. i don't know the story. why?"
"michael told me to keep it from you until it was necessary."
"why?" ella was getting frustrated by this.
"because he loved you," elliot shrugged.
"oh," ella breathed out. "but i don't even-"
"-remember him, trust me, i know that ella. can i continue now?"
she nods.
"well, michael may or may not have done something to you to make you forget him."
"wait, what did he do? and why did he do that?"
"see, he knew he was going to get killed," and i know exactly who killed him, ella thought.
"but why did he make me forget him? and how did he do it?"
"ella, i don't really want you to be in trouble, or danger. just pack up, come on, i'll take you to new york."
"no, elliot! i'm not leaving, alright. just tell me."
"he made you forget him so you wouldn't be hurt."
"hurt?"
"you had a thing for him. and he had a thing for you and it could've worked out if he didn't get killed."
"so he just blacked out every single thing about him from my brain?"
"yeah, pretty much," elliot sat down.
"how did he do it?"
"ella, there are really messed up things about this town."
"oh, trust me, i know."
"i don't want you to be in danger."
"elliot. how did he do it?"
"a witch. not like ones with moles and hats and gowns, but like a girl who could magically cast spells."
if ella hadn't been talking to ghosts, she'd call elliot crazy.
"this town has witches?"
"yeah, and one of them is the reason you don't remember michael."
"elliot?" ella squeaked out.
"yeah, ella?"
"call an ambulance because i'm about to faint," she breathed out.
"not again," he mutters, quickly picking up his phone.
