"I can't believe this is happening." Riley muttered standing outside Jack and Maya's apartment. She bent over in pain and had to remember to breathe. It was 1 A.M. and she was standing in the hall of a creepy building about to complain to her best friend, Maya, about her period cramps, her pathetic love life, and how life sucked. But a piece of her told her that they DID offer her a place to go whenever, wherever.
So she brought her hand up on the wooden door and grimaced one more time, before knocking on the door. The noise bounced off the halls and sounded through the building. She winced but knocked again.
***************************
"Jack?" Maya shook him slightly, her eyes slightly open, but only just.
"What?" He mumbled, trying to get back to sleep.
"Some ones at the door." She commented. The covers of their bed felt so comfortable, but she had a feeling she'd feel the cold air soon.
"At 1 in the morning?" He questioned, his hair fuzzed out.
"Yeah. Come on. I don't want to go alone." She said slapping his shoulder as she got up, grabbing her robe.
"Hmm." He mumbled back, still in bed.
"What if it's a serial killer?" She commented. He sat up at this thought. His over active imagination kicking into overdrive. She hadn't really expected him to believe that, she was being sarcastic. But hey? Whatever works.
He stumbled out of bed, with his grey sweat pants and his big T-shirt. He padded along the floor behind Maya, grabbing his gun as he passed the table. She looked through the peephole. "Riley?"
Jack looked surprised at this and Maya swung the door open quickly. "Riles?" She asked in question at seeing the young girl having an emotional breakdown.
Riley looked between them and looked a little shocked they actually answered. She took notice of how she had just woke them up and she immediately felt bad. "I'm sorry. I-I shouldn't have come. Go back to sleep." She turned to walk away, but Maya caught her shoulder. She took a step forward and held Riley by her arms. She looked into her eyes and took in her horrible state. She held her hand up to her forehead. "My Gosh, Riley your burning up. Jack, go get a cold rag." She said guiding her onto the couch.
Riley stumbled a little but Maya held her firmly. "Relax. What's wrong, baby girl?" She has always treated Riley as her daughter, having practically adopting her when she started dating Jack.
Riley laid back into the pillow. "I don't know." She collapsed into her stomach as another wave of pain hit her. Jack showed up with the rag and Maya took it placing it on her forehead.
"Riley, is it cramps?" Maya asked calmly and easily.
"I don't know. It feels worse." She said honestly. Maya nodded and lifted up her shirt to see her stomach. She looked for any external causes and touched each of Riley's rubs individually, the military doctor side of her coming out.
On the third from bottom, Riley howled out loudly. "Jack, she broke a rib." Maya told him, looking at him worriedly. "We gotta get her to the hospital, I don't know if it did any internal damage." That was all the head up Jack needed, taking the girl into his arms. "Wait, a minute." Maya stopped him from running out the door. She grabbed some essentials, her purse, gun, phone, and a blanket to wrap Riley in. They hurried to Jacks priceless car and sped to the nearest hospital. Maya held Riley while Jack drove, running a few red lights. Riley whimpered when a flash of white hot, searing pain hit her. "Ugh." She rolled over slightly, but Maya caught her before she fell.
"Jack, hurry!"
Surprisingly, they made it there in one piece and Jack practically sprinted with her wrapped in a blanket into the building. Doctors whisked her away in a gurney and Jack tried to follow, but they stopped him. Maya grabbed his arm. "She's in good hands, Jack."
He sighed, still in his sweats and T-shirt. But then he took notice of his wife's appearance. She was in a robe three sizes to big, in bunny slippers, a long braid, froggy pants and a Mickey Mouse shirt. She was something.
He chuckled a little. "Darlin?"
She looked up from her gaze of wonder. "Yeah?"
He gestured to her and she blushed. "I was in a hurry." She defended taking a seat in the waiting room.
Two hours passed with no new information, when finally a doctor approached them. "Riley Davis?"
"Yes, is she alright?"
"She is in surgery right now. We don't expect her to be out of there for another couple of hours. You might want to call some relatives for a change of clothes." He said smirking slightly, almost as if thinking of the country couple as below him. "Uh, Doctor? Was the bottom left third rib broke? Did it puncture an artery?" Maya asked, not missing the glance he gave her way.
"Yes," He hesitated, "Are you a Doctor?"
"Army doctor."
"Ah. I see." He rolled his eyes, before taking his leave.
Maya saw Jack grit his teeth. She just responded with a pat to his shoulder, telling him it was alright.
"I'll call Mac." Jack said leaving the waiting room, still mad.
Within the hour, the Phoenix team was in the waiting room, all anxious to hear the news on the beloved friend.
The same snobby doctor walked in. "Well, it was much simpler than we thought. A simple fracture. No bleeding and a simple heal." The others seemed relieved, but Maya could tell he was lying.
"Doctor? Can I speak to you for second?" The doctor responded with a nod, before they walked towards the desk, to talk more.
"I don't mean to contradict you. But I'm almost for certain that it wasn't just a fracture. The whole bone was separated when I felt it."she said steadily, hoping for him to just simply double check.
"I am sorry, but you are mistaken. See we are professionals we don't make mistakes." He said holding his head high. "Now if I were you, lady, I'd go back to that screwed up family and keep your mouth shut."
She tried not to show her shock. She walked back to the group, while they talked about all that had just happened.
"What was that about?" Jack asked, holding his arm around her Mickey Mouse shirt covering her waist.
"Nothing." She muttered. Jack looked worried for a second, but let it go.
When they were allowed to visit Riley, she was asleep. They stayed with her the whole time during visiting hours. She finally awoke, and by then she was feeling the injury, not enough for the others to notice, but enough to where Maya noticed.
Once Mac, Bozer and Madi had left for work, Madi having dismissed the two of them from work that day. Once they left, Maya stood suddenly. "Jack, watch the door. Tell me if a doctor comes." Jack looked surprised. "What?"
"Dangit, Dalton, just do it." She commanded him seriously. He lined up against the closed doors window.
Maya walked over to Riley's bed and the girl looked almost frightened. "Riles, you trust me, right?"
Without hesitance she nodded. "I'm going to unwrap these and feel your ribs. Tell me when it hurts. And I mean it. The second any pain." Riley nodded. Maya undid the cloth wrapped tightly around her abdomen.
"I didn't want to worry the others." She told Jack. "I don't like that doctor. He doesn't know what he's talking about." Jack looked back at her. "Are you sure, Maya?"
"Positive."
"Alright then. Do what ever."
She rested Riley's ribs and sure enough, the third bottom left rib was completely disconnected. Riley responded quickly when she felt the pressure on where her rib should've been.
"I was right." She mumbled.
"Riley, this is really important. Did they take you into surgery or just a scan?"
"I don't know. I just remember having to lay real still for a machine." Riley said, trying to think back.
"That's a scan. He said you went into surgery. But if he did there'd be stitches. I don't see any." Jack looked back again.
"So What he lied?"
"Put Simply. We still don't know if there's internal bleeding though." Maya said thinking, back to the time when she first saw Riley.
"What the heck is that?" She said suddenly looking at the liquid to her IV. "They connected a hydromorphone to your muscular tissue, Riley. This will kill you." She said suddenly, pinching off the tube. Jack turned around suddenly and ran to the bed to help. "Jack, grab a rag, once I disconnect the IV, blood will shoot out. Cover it, more pressure than you'd think." She said and Jack did this, stopping the stream of blood.
"Riley, look at me. Take a few deep breaths and hold the last one until I say." She said while looking for a stethoscope and counting in her head. "Okay." She felt her heart. Thump.. thump...thump....thump.thump
"There's no pattern." She whispered slightly surprised.
"How long have you been on this?"
"Couple hours." She said her head swimming.
"Gosh." She whispered. "Don't let them give you anything. Say it's your medical right. Anything you can think of." She took Jack aside as Riley drifted to a light sleep, not being able to stop it.
"Jack, she should've been on a Morphobond drip. The stuff she's on is extremely addictive. It almost killed her." Jack put his hands above his head and let lose a heavy breath. "Is she okay now?"
"No. She needs more rest than they'll allow here. I watched the rounds the doctors make around here. A new doc visits every room every 45 mins. I don't know. I think it's to brag on their quality, but their robbing them of their sleep. Not to mention liars. and stupid mistakes like that will kill someone." She practically whisper yelled. She paced the floor in her PJs still, "We have to get her out of here. Get her a real exam, find out if theirs bleeding."
Jack nodded. "Than thats what we'll do." He said, walking to Riley's side.
"Jack, if one of us gets separated because of security or something, go to St. John's across town. Tell them to give her full exams." He nodded. She stirred in her sleep. Maya looked to the room across from them. An old man reached to his daughters hand. She had extra clothes laying next to her. "I'll be back."
Walking up to the woman, she came up with a sappy story and asked for her change of clothes. The woman graciously handed them over.
Once she got back to the room. She told Jack to turn around and watch the door. She helped Riley into her own PJs, knowing the jeans and tight sweatshirt would hurt her worse than simple clothes. Maya slipped into the woman's clothes and replaced Jacks spot at the window while he picked her up.
"Jack. Get Riley. Go out the side room wall door, the doctors coming!" She told him sternly. She hopped into the bed and pulled the covers over her. She would buy some time. Jack shared a worried look at her. "I'll be fine. Go!"
The doctor gently walked to the morphine drip and tested the nozzle, before making sure it was connected to the "patient". She assumed it was as Maya had stuck the needle into the mattress, so it looked like she had it in.
The doctor left a moment later, but Maya knew she'd be back. The snobby doctor stormed in a second later. "You are not Riley Davis!" He hollered loudly.
She leapt from the bed and tried to run, but he had brought back up with him. Security.
The next thing she knew she was at the local jail. She kicked her feet on the bunk, wondering how Riley was. If Jack even made it to St. John's.
A familiar face showed up on the other side of the bars. "Hey, stranger." Jack said holding up a set of keys. He was breaking her out.
"How's Riley?" She asked immediately, once the cuffs were off.
"She's at St. John's. Here was internal injuries but they have her sewed up. She's on the right drugs this time and her rib is positioned right so it will heal." He whispered to her as they snuck past the passed out guard.
"Good."
"You did good." He whispered.
"Nothing like a country person to show up some docs.". (It's just a blurb.)
Alright here's the deal. People think, just because some folks grow up a little different then you might doesn't mean you can treat them any different than you would your favorite singer. They are people too. Just because they are a little poorer off and have to work a little harder isn't an excuse for anything. Some people just plain like it that. For your chores You might take the trash to the alley? Some people have to drive a four wheeler a half mile to the farm to throw it away. You might do dishes? Some people carry water buckets to 8 different lots every day, or when the tractors broke and have to do everything by hand in -0 weather. Think about that this Christmas. Now I'm not criticizing people who live with different jobs that pay well. I'm sure they work hard too. And I'm proud of how this country has progressed since the dark ages, but all I'm saying is:
Be grateful, because some kids are starving and just want a roll for A present.
Some kids. Some people.Guys, believe it or not we all pee the same color.
Sorry ranted a little. Have a merry Christmas hope y'all like this chapter!
