What 2017 Taught Me

12-16-17

All of December I have been
Trying to put 2017 into words
To decipher it and break it down
So I can reflect on it all
But the only thing that comes to mind is that
It was life changing
And from that comes no negative
Or positive connotations
Just the fact that is was
Extremely transitional
An emotional ride from January to now
If you would have asked me 12 months ago
If I thought I would be right here
Right now
Surrounded by new faces
In a flat town
Living in different home
With only one friend still remaining from back then
I would've laughed and said
You were crazy
I would've never expected to have
Traveled homeless during the summer
Bouncing from relative to relative
Between different states
Late nights under stars
just a few feet away from the ocean
4th of July fireworks in Jersey
And staring out the window behind the couch
Of my aunt's living room at 2 AM
Wondering what the future would bring
Grueling power outages in PA
Exploring new places and
Redbox Adventures with my sister
Mom sunglasses and all
There were days when I
Finally lost it
And days when I found it all again
These summer days contained my
Steepest highs and deepest lows
But I felt so alive
Driving through sunken cities
I would've never imagined the
Deep loss I would feel
From August through late October
As the school year hit me hard
And the environment changed so much
But you can either look at the world
As a clock chiming down
Or a universe full of beautiful opportunity
As I reflect on 2017
All I can really say is that
It was the most life changing year of my life
And I will never forget what it taught me
Live
Love
Rejoice
Look for the good in a sinister sea
Be a beacon of light
But know its okay to burn out sometimes
Accept change
Take care of yourself
Learn to let go
And make new friends
Keep your eyes on the present
But hope for the future
Because tomorrow your world
Could be rearranged
But today,
Today is everything.
So don't hold back
And don't forget to live.
