ACT II

SCENE X

[Setting: In the backyard of the school building during the break. The noise from the main compound was muffled, and CODY was sitting on the concrete stairs that lead to the back door. QUINN hadn't come to school today, and he was feeling a bit out of place all alone.]

LINDSEY: Hey.

CODY: (Turns to find LINDSEY walking into the backyard through the space that led to the main compound.)

LINDSEY: We need to talk.

CODY: (Stays quiet as he watches LINDSEY walk over to him.)

LINDSEY: (Sits down on a stair below CODY before turning to look at him.) You really are the quiet type, aren't you? (Laughs.)

CODY: (Stays silent.)

LINDSEY: (Sighs.) I'm sure you can guess why I'm here.

CODY: QUINN?

LINDSEY: Yup. (Smiles as she adjusts her skirt.) You're dating him, aren't you?

CODY: (Blushes before nodding.)

LINDSEY: (Laughs.) I still don't understand why he's dating you. I mean, I don't get it? Even if he's into boys — why you? You can barely even talk.

CODY: (Stays quiet as he hugs his legs to himself.)

LINDSEY: (Sighs.) I'm sorry for rambling, you can say I'm just in disbelief that's all. (Smiles.)

CODY: (Says nothing.)

Silence.

LINDSEY: What happens after graduation?

CODY: hmm?

LINDSEY: I mean, what happens when we've graduated. Will you two still be dating?

CODY: (Looks down at his worn-out shoes.)

[CODY had never thought of that. Sure, he knew QUINN would find some work or the other, but CODY wasn't sure about himself. His brother had vowed that he'd get thrown out of the house after graduation, and thinking about what would come after that always scared him.]

CODY: I don't know.

Pause.

CODY: (Looks over at LINDSEY.) Why does it matter?

LINDSEY: (Shrugs.) I just asked, don't you see like, a future or something? Or don't you like QUINN—

CODY: (Cutting LINDSEY off.) I like him a lot.

LINDSEY: (Smiles.) Well, maybe you should start thinking about the future then. (Gets up from the concrete stair.)

LINDSEY: I have to go. See you around, and say hi to QUINN for me when you see him after school. (Head's out of the background.)

CODY: (Sighs when LINDSEY is out of sight.)

CODY: (Runs hand through his hair as he thought of what she said.)

[CODY couldn't help thinking LINDSEY had a point. It was only a few months till they were done with school in general. Most of the students weren't going to college — people around their town didn't have the funds for that, but even though CODY was sure QUINN wouldn't get up and disappear from town one random morning. He was worried that he'd be forgotten as QUINN figures out what he wants to do with his life.]

CODY: (Muttering under his breath.) Plans — Plans for the future. (Frowns.)

[No matter how much he thought about it he couldn't really think up anything. He lived day by day, morning to morning, night to night. He had no plans. He'd never seen a reason to have them before, but maybe know he had to think of some because he was sure if he didn't keep up with QUINN he might end up being put aside.]

CODY: (Turns towards the school building when the bell for the end of break rings.)

CODY: (Sighs as he gets up to head back into the school building.)

[Planning could wait for another day.]

Curtains fall.
