Jeon Jungkook struggled that night. Black magic was the only thing he could think of for hours on end and when the last attempt to close his eyes and be met with peace was foiled by another horrific nightmare he decided to go for a walk. The fort was deathly quiet, the only sound to be heard was the torches flickering along the stone walls, as Jungkook trudged down the hallways. The quiet before the storm, he supposed. He pushed passed the wooden barrack doors open with as much care as he could muster, not wanting to break the strange silence that surrounded him, and breathed in the cool night air with a long sigh.
"You're up late." Lee Yue wasn't surprised that Jungkook didn't flinch at her sudden appearance beside him. He gave a slight shrug and continued to stare at the starry night sky with very tired eyes, Yue knew he was probably very stressed about the mission he and their leader had been given.
"Couldn't sleep." He managed in an abrasive voice, clearing his throat twice before falling silent again.
"Want to talk about it?" While she was new, Yue had learned many things since moving to the midlands and one of those things was that Jeon Jungkook was as obstinate as he was good-looking, not easily opening up to anyone and it took a lot to get him talking when not in a group of people.
Jungkook sighed and turned his head lazily to look down at her, "You should be sleeping."
"Oh, do I have a curfew now, Sir?" He bit his cheeks out of irritation and Yue couldn't help but smile, she wasn't going to let him win that easily.
"Do I need a reason to go for a midnight stroll?" he retorted.
"Do I need a reason to join a friend for a midnight stroll?" she crossed her arms over her chest.
"Am I not entitled to some privacy?"
"Am I not entitled to be concerned for my friend's strange behaviour?" he frowned.
"Am I behaving oddly?"
"Why do you keep answering my questions with questions that only make me want to ask you more questions?" Another sigh.
"I'm teasing. So serious." Yue laughed and punched his arm playfully, wincing at her actions immediately after her dislocated shoulder whined at her harshly.
"Are you alright?" he looked like he was about to check her shoulder but pulled back shyly after realising she was only in a nightgown and robe.
"Fantastic actually, I managed to get you to speak more than 2 syllables." He chuckled and twitched his to the side nervously, Yue loved it when he did that, she thought it was almost as cute as the pout he gave her after she beat him in the sparring match the week before.
"You should be getting sleep though, especially after the course you did today, you must be exhausted." He wasn't wrong, every bone in Yue's body was screaming at her but after seeing him wondering the halls at 1 o'clock in the morning she decided Jungkook looked like he could use some company.
"I'll survive. Tomorrow- or I suppose today, is Saturday and since I won in the obstacle course I can sleep all day if I want."
"Lucky you, I have a long trip to the Northern Temple in 4 hours." So that's where they're going.
"Oh, that is far... and you complained about me needing rest. You'll need every wink of sleep you can get if you plan to stay on your horse." They both laughed and Jungkook felt the lightest he'd felt all evening. He liked having Yue around, she was fun and kind. Unlike most of the girls in the guard, Yue had no ulterior motives in becoming his friend other than 'wanting someone to kick the shit out of every now and again', as she'd put it. She had been easy to talk to, a friendly competitor with more energy and positivity than a sun pixie.
"How's your arm?" he asked. She rubbed her very blue shoulder and put on a brave face to hide the sharp pain that shot through the muscle surrounding it
"It's... sensitive, but again I'll be alright. Thank you for accompanying me today. You really didn't have to." Jungkook shrugged and simply said he wanted to make sure she wasn't severely injured.
"Good... Good..." An awkward silence enveloped them for a good minute and Yue was the one who broke it.
"Jungkook... I know you're not allowed to tell me what's going on, I know it's pretty serious and I'm not going to pretend I know what it's like to be in your stressful position but one thing I can promise that the Gods will get us through it. Whether you believe in them or not they are watching, guarding and aiding us in many ways to overcome the dark times. As long as you have a cause worth fighting for, they will protect you." That was one of things Jungkook hadn't been surprised to learn about Yue, her faith in the higher powers that watched them from above the starry sky. Jungkook prayed, not often but he did, his family were devoted members of his village's church but Yue had a special relationship, a bond that very few had with the Gods.
"Thank you Yue, that comforts me knowing that very powerful beings are going to watch my every move to see if I screw up. I'm sure I'll sleep just fine now." Jungkook felt his lips spread into a wide bunny smile at the face Yue pulled, she was clearly not amused.
"Now who's being too serious? Lighten up." She huffed and blew a piece of her white hair out of her face before giving a half smile.
"Thank you... for keeping me company." Jungkook smiled again, bashfully this time, but still a smile.
Yue responded with a grin of her own, "Anytime. I owe you for helping me with Trey."
"You should never let that twat get to you. He's just jealous you have more talent in your pinkie finger than he does in his entire body." She laughed more heartily then she meant to and covered her mouth with her hand to supress the noise. Yue punched his arm again, with her other hand this time and decided it was time for her to go to sleep.
"Have a safe trip Jungkook, don't do anything stupid."
"Me? Do something unintelligent? Never!" Yue gave him a small hug that was long enough to set Jungkook's skin on fire, before returning inside. He was very grateful for the breeze cooling his now warm face, he really wished she'd worn more than just her flimsy nightwear. He shook his head to clear the thoughts and turned to return to his own quarters and attempt some form of rest. At least now his head was filled with thoughts of Yue rather than thoughts of the beasts he would soon have to face.
