Chapter Sixteen: Protected by the whole pack.....well almost everybody...
"I don't want this," I yelled, getting worked up over some stupid rhyme that an old coot had conjured up, probably because she was bored. But still, the fact that the first part had happened unsettled me, "I want life to stay the way it is right now, is that so much to ask? I've been shuffled around most of my life and all of Jake's, always when I find someplace that I actually might belong, Wham! I get moved yet again."
Lucy just stood there, her hands on her lap twisting together nervously, her eyes downcast, "Are you sure..." she started to ask.
"Yes!" I almost yelled, but she didn't flinch from my tone.
"Well then I guess we'll just have to keep you out of harm's way, including most of the vampires on this planet. You are one of the most wanted by all vampire kind, because of that you hold the key to their downfall." She sighed, her head falling into her hands, I could hear a quiet sobbing, and my hand went automatically out to her shoulder, trying to comfort her as much as I could.
"Shh..." I started to say, but she interrupted, "You don't get it! Why can't you just be the old fearless Kenz we all knew when we were growing up? That person wouldn't back down from a way to protect her pack, even if it meant risking her own life, that Kenz was the Kenz we all knew and loved..." her eyes were a blazing silver as she glared at me. How could she expect this kinda thing of me? I had just re-met her today, and now she wanted me to go and risk both me and Jake's lives, for what? But still her words rang with a clarity only the truth could bring out; she believed the prophecy more than I could ever know.
I grasped her hand, "That Kenz has been forgotten, forced out of my memories forever." I said in a quiet voice, "and you're right that Kenz would've taken this opportunity to defend this pack like this, but I'm not her anymore and with her leaving she took that part of my spirit away too."
She stared up at me, and wordlessly stood up and walked out the door, it slammed behind her in a finalizing tone. Great I had made maybe yet another enemy, just what I didn't need here, I already had Chris's mother, and his fiancé breathing down my back about me being here, but I didn't need Lucy to do so too.
I shut off the lights and quietly stepped out into the woods, it's slightly cold air hitting my face. Hurriedly I rushed back to the Alpha's house, following a trail, and passing no one. The lights were dimming in the sitting room just as I passed the front door. I tried the door, but it was locked, I just stood there looking dumb, jiggling the handle and knocking on the door. Finally the other side of it turned and revealed a very sleepy Chris, "What?" he asked rubbing his eyes.
"I'm kinda out here, all alone, in the woods with a locked door ahead of me, I want to get inside." I said sarcastically with a roll of my eyes. He gestured for me to come in, suppressing a yawn. I stepped under his arm and walked into the hallway, surprised by how warm the place suddenly felt. "It was kinda cold out there," I said to no one in particular, but Chris didn't know that.
"Yeah, you probably will have a heightened sense of temperature changes, it happens with the change." He said, walking down to the kitchen.
"Hey, wait....I have news," I said, racing after him, and skidding on the tile floor. I bumped into the table's side, "Ouch," I said rubbing the side of my leg.
"What news?" and this time he really did yawn, but he picked up on my anxiety and poured himself a cup of coffee from the coffee maker that seemed to be running around the clock.
"I had a chat with Lucy..." I started to say, having trouble getting to the point. "Yeah, that's kinda what I figured what you two were doing," he said with an eye roll and a deep swallow of coffee.
