Hiccup~

Toothless grunts stubbornly as I coax him into the corral near the little wooden hut on the Hogwarts field. He is always cautious when it comes to unfamiliar places, but I know he’ll get used to it.

“Is that a dragon?” a female voice with a thick Scottish accent comes from the stables beside me, where a huge black and white Clydesdale is standing.

“Um, yeah, he’s called a Night Fury,” I reply, looking up from the latch on the gate. A girl of about my age--sixteen--steps out of the horse stall. Her head of wild red hair and golden Gryffindor badge stands out against the black robes that I have always longed to wear.

When the girl rests her hand on Toothless’ nose, he starts to nuzzle and sniff her fingers like a dog. She laughs out loud and turns to me again.

“What’s his name?” She starts to lead Toothless into the corral, scratching him under his chin. I have to give her props; not a lot of people would walk up to a dragon and start stroking it.

“This is Toothless. And you are…?” She seems to suddenly realize that she hasn’t told me her name yet. “Oh! Sorry! I’m Merida,” Merida introduces herself before starting to pet Toothless again.

“My names Hiccup, in case you were wondering,” I say when she doesn’t say anything else.

“Oh sorry,” Merida apologizes, “I was just distracted by this silly guy!” We both laugh when Toothless shoots her an annoyed expression as if to say, who are you calling silly? “Are you a student here?” she inquires, looking me up and down. Her eyes linger on my mechanical foot for a second, but she doesn’t ask about it, which I am grateful for.

“No, actually,” I tell her, suddenly uncomfortable, “I’m the gamekeeper. But as of today I am the Care of Magical Creatures Professor.” Merida’s blue eyes widen.

“Aren’t you a little young to be a Hogwarts professor?”

“Yes, yes I am,” I counter. She starts to jog back in the direction of the school.

“Well, it was nice meeting you Hiccup, but I’ve got to get to the Welcoming Feast. Bye!” I watch her leave as I think, could I really have just made a friend?
