Breathlessness

Today, I run a mile with only you in mind,

Thoughts that make me breathless,

Memories that leave me yearning.

Times when you held my hand like this,

Or kissed my lips like that,

Times when all you did was stare at me,

And I felt complete.

Now I have to run a mile with you in mind,

Trying to forget you and the way your touch left my skin burning,

I run to forget you,

And yet, all I do is remember.

Remember the soppy nickname you gave me last summer,

Or the moment you first said my name.

Now, when I sit down for a cool drink of water,

After my body ran that long mile,

And my mind ran on you,

I realize they both have something in common.

You both leave me breatheless.
