I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ. Slit me at my belly and it might slide out, meaty and dark, drop on the floor so you could stomp on it.

GILLIAN FLYNN / Dark Places

Will Capote is nothing short of monstrous. Somewhere beneath the bars of ribs there is a niche, carved out in the shape of a heart, that waits for life where there is none. There was nothing soft or good about her, and there never would be. There was no room for clemency, at least none that Ares would allow. She was born to wage wars, taste the red iron that seeped through her gums, feel the heavy thunk of bodies hitting the hollow earth—this is where she belongs, in battlefields and blood, feeling antagonism pulsing through her veins. It gives her life, and that's an appalling thing to admit.

But something in her cried power. She was a sharpened knife digging deep into flesh, carving words of venom, but never repentance. That's why Will was favored by her father; it was the same garish flames in her eyes that burned like wildfire, all-consuming and ruinous; it was because all of the worst parts of Ares lived in her as well, stifling, seething. It used to be that Will could look at her reflection without knowing that familiar harrowing feeling when she sees the creature looking back at her. But now she sees her father in every part of her and no facet remains untouched by the wickedness of Ares. Now she shatters mirrors, letting the glass cut through her boney knuckles, thinking that pain is the only thing that's real. And now there is nothing redeemable about her.

Piercing through the veil of placidity, Will has seen the underbelly of humanity, has peeled back the layers of skin to see the viscera in its rawest form. She knows just how conditional and cruel love could be. After all, love is what earned her the glaring scar that sinks down through her eye to her lip, carved flesh like the way she carves into others. Blood will have blood. And even if she tried to fight it, nature always wins in the end. She was destined to be this lousy creature—hell in the form of an impish child. She was a fresh wound, raw and exposed, festering with infection that goes bone-deep. She was golden ichor pooling by the bodies of the defeated, shameful and ungodly, slain like monsters and left to the night.

Will Capote was a warrior... and soon enough it would consume her.
