Later, after they'd finished their swim and redressed, they walked back across the desert toward camp. William gathered rose blossoms while Sophie walked a few steps ahead. When they arrived at the tree under which they slept, Sophie claimed she was tired and sat down. With the tree trunk supporting her back, she closed her eyes and let her head fall to the side as it would were she asleep.
But she wasn't. Instead, she observed William going about his business, laying out the rose petals upon the flat surface of a boulder, occasionally breathing in the scent of the bouquet. But his paleness persisted, and it occurred to Sophie that the roses would not cure him.
