When Iris returned home, she wasn't the same.
Every bit of light she had once possessed seemed to have vanished. Her eyes were dull, her hair was dull, her skin was dull and her cheekbones stuck out almost sickeningly. In every sense except literally, she was a ghost. It was like watching a dead person who was still breathing.
Any extra weight that had once clung to her body seemed to melt off her frame until she was skin and bones. Even her hair began to fall out from the lack of food in her system.
No one was able to get through to her, not Tommy, not Polly, nor her mother.

She would go days without speaking to anyone, and when she did it would be to mutter something as simple as 'excuse me'. Other than that she floated around like a phantom; never to speak or interact.
No one knew what had happened to her in the prison despite their endless investigating and speculation. But they knew it was bad. It had to be. How else could she have such a drastic personality shift? They tried to ask her, but each time they recieved the same reaction: unacknowledgement.
Even if he rarely saw his wife and spoke to her even less, Tommy noticed the change in her physical appearance whenever he caught a sliver of a glimpse of her; more notably around her abdominal area. When she had been arrested, her bump had just started to lift the material of the clothes she wore. But now when he saw her, her clothes hung from her as though they were a multitude of sizes too large. At first he wasn't certain, but by now he had guessed their baby was gone.
