Alprazolam or Xanax is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.  It belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines that act on the brain and central nervous system to cause a calming affect. Xanax works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA is an amino acid in the body that acts as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system. It limits nerve transmission, preventing nervous activity. The drug is extremely addictive. Xanax is used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Drowsiness, light-headedness, sleeping for extended periods of time, cognitive impairment, sluggishness, nausea or vomiting, headache, dry mouth, delirium, slurred speech, seizures, vertigo, impaired coordination, weakness are ALL potential symptoms of Xanax use and/ or abuse. If you combine Xanax with other substances it can cause heart attack, coma, and even death. Xanax is sometimes used with other drugs, usually opioids (such as valium or oxycodone) and alcohol. Xanax overdose is highly unlikely.
