Lily loves Alan and Alan loves Lily. The only problem is that when you’re seven, people don’t really believe you when you say you love the redheaded girl next door, or the curly haired mischief maker who likes to throw rocks at your window.

“Grownups are stupid.”

“Agreed.”

It isn’t just because Lily ‘borrowed’ her mother’s best dress, or because Alan caked his father’s dress shoes with a thin veil of mud; it’s because grownups don’t understand that sometimes, when you’re craving the next big adventure, you just need to run off into the woods and get married to the love of your life.

“I guess we’ll have to wait ‘till we’re older to get married,” Alan sighs, “like, when we’re eight.”

Lily kisses Alan’s forehead in silent agreement, then, gently, brushes his face with her eyelashes. Giggling, he nudges her with his hip and begrudgingly pulls himself off her front step.

“See ya, wife.”

“Bye, husband.”
