Fremantle Prison officially opened in 1856 and closed in 1991. During its time as a prison 43 men and 1 woman were executed at its gallows by hanging. A further several died within its walls due to accidents or other reasons.

A husband and his wife once stopped in Fremantle for two nights. After searching for a place to stay they found some pleasant cottages up on the hill near the Fremantle prison entrance and decided to stay there. A girl told them she heard the cottages were haunted by ex-convicts but not to worry because all they do is stare at you.

The following night after they ate they sat on the sofa watching TV and didn't drink alcohol. About half way through The Bill there was a reverberating crash which sounded like someone had fiercely kicked the backyard door. They looked at each other but neither of them wanted to investigate as the back door only led to a high walled yard abutting the prison wall. Unhappy but determined they went to bed and this time the husband put ear plugs in to avoid the sounds of the chain gang. Suddenly again it was 5 a.m. and they were both awake. Suddenly he felt the bed shuddering as if someone were holding the frame and pushing it. It stopped after a short while and then, according to his wife, the bell and chain gang started again.
