When you and Dan break up after a year-long relationship, he takes it the hardest. That's not to say you don't struggle with the new reality, because you do, but whereas you're trying to move on and build a life separate from him... Dan hasn't entirely given up hope that one day, the two of you could still fix things. Whenever he sees you, whether you're stopping by the police station to meet up with Ella, or bumping into him at a local coffee shop, he just shuts down.
He misses you, he still loves you, and the fact that you don't feel the same way anymore is hard on him, to a point where he just has to process it and grieve, even if it's through longing gazes and telling everyone stories about your time together. Surprisingly, he relies even on Lucifer for support.
