If you asked him how did it all began, he wouldn’t know what to tell you, despite being a know-it-all. And if you asked him what made him feel that way, he wouldn’t know which answer he’d pick, despite being one of the best decision-maker in the group. And if you asked him if he’d tell her, he’d for sure say ‘no’. For the first time in his life, Ali didn’t know what to do.
What started it, when did it happen? He couldn’t pinpoint when exactly, after everything that had happened, after all the chaos and destruction they’ve faced, something in him wanted something worth protecting, their friendship, and her.
And what about her that enticed him in that way? Eyes as black as night where the stars belong, a smile so bright not even the sun could rival, a laugh that shook the ground and everything with it, the kindness she shows towards an unforgiving world, or the compassion that burned deep within her? In a way, he was fascinated by her.
And what will he lose if he chose to tell the truth? Her trust, her smile, her laugh, their friendship? There were many things that he could loose, and very little he could gain. Her not reciprocating his feelings will hurt, but being estranged with her will break him. But then again, would he be able to forgive himself if something happened, and he never told her?
He was a genius, not a psychologist. Despite his gifts, he’s still a teenager. A gangly, sleep-deprived, awkward teenager. Romance was something he never thought to be serious. It was so easy to ignore it back then, what changed?
Why now, why when a war is about to explode, why his best friend?
Ali hated it when he reaches a slump, and this is no different. He needed answers and he needed solutions, that’s how it always goes with him. Like other discoveries, this could just be a false alarm, a mistake.
But he didn’t now there was so much to unearth
