"What's this?"

"My pinkie, you idiot." He laughed at me, a light, carefree sound that warmed my heart.

"Why are you sticking out your pinkie?" I wrinkled my nose.

"To make a promise," he said gently. I looked into his pale blue eyes, instantly captivated. I break my gaze away, breathing in deeply. My heart pounds against my chest.

"What promise?"

"Put your pinkie up first." He instructs. I do as he says, until our pinkies are crossed against one another. "Let's promise," he says. "To always be together and never, ever stop loving each other."

My breath stutters. "What?" I laugh. "We're only eight, Thomas -"

"Do you promise?" He looks at me again, and this time I can't break my gaze away. "I love you, Michael, and that love won't ever break." His face softens into a smile. "No matter where I go."

I am at a loss for words. I can't believe at eight - I blush, feeling it from my head to the tips of my toes. God, he's going to be such a heartbreaker.

But he'd take no other heart but mine.

And I'm sure he wouldn't break it.

I smile brightly in response and curl my pinkie around his. "Okay. I promise."

"For as long as we live, and then some." Thomas says softly, curling his pinkie too, looking down. The slight contact sends electricity through my bones.

"Only some?" I joke. "What about our next life -"

"That too." Thomas insists. "I love you to infinity and beyond, Michael."

We hold our pinkies tight, and he shakes it up and down as if sealing the promise.

"Well, how can I top that?" I joke. My voice sounds carefree, but it's close to shaking. My god, this boy...

I look at Thomas, still focused on our connected hands. He's so handsome. But even if he was faceless, just a blur, I'd love him all the same.

Thomas looks up and smiles in a lighthearted manner for the first time this evening. The sky is already dark high above us, twinkling with stars.

"I love you, Michael." He breathes.

My breath gets caught in my throat, just as he leans in to press his lips against mine.

"I love you too," I murmur against his soft mouth, too quiet for him to hear.
