Chapter 10: The Safe Haven

(Your POV)

The sound of birds chirping, waves crashing along land, and the voices of people in the distance. I open my eyes and see I'm in a wooden shelter, with a bed, a chair, and a table. I get up and realize I'm now in jeans with a white shirt.

I walk out of the shelter and see tents, gardens, and tons of people working. But in the middle of it all, a pile of sticks and branches, across from it is a large stone with a single table next to it. I begin to walk down the path, and I see a familiar face walking towards me. Minho. 

Once close enough he pulls me into a big hug, and then Thomas comes along. "How are you doing?" Minho asks me as he pulls away, I look around as more people I know come to see me. "How long have I been out?" I ask ignoring Minho's question, "A day. But Thomas here just woke up too." Minho answers, I look around the crowd surrounding me. And I soon remember the events at the last city, but someone else is missing.

"Thomas. Where's Teresa?" I ask him, Thomas looks down and rubs the back of his neck as if not wanting to say the truth. "I'm sorry Y/N...we lost her." Thomas says looking back up to me, I begin to feel tears form in my eyes. She was the only family I had left. Thomas then comes up and hugs me as we both mourn over Teresa.

~~Time Skip~~

Vince had just given me a quick tour of The Safe Haven, I was standing next to the cooking tent as I watched over everybody. Until I saw Brenda walking up to me, "Y/N. Can we talk?" She asks, I nod and she leads me into the forest behind the tents. 

She stops at a tree and leans on it looking at my leg, "do you remember?" She asks me, I look at her in confusion before I process everything that happened at the last city. And then I remember, when Newt was being dragged off of me, he had bit me. I quickly roll up my pant leg only to see it's bandaged up. 

"I was in charge of bandaging and changing you." I hear Brenda say, I roll down my pant leg and look back up to her. "Have you told anyone?" I ask her, she shakes her head no. "But Y/N, it's spreading." Brenda begins, "we can't have a crank here. Vince will freak out and who knows what will happen if someone else gets infected!" I ponder on the thought before coming to a conclusion.

"We're not gonna tell anyone, we have the serum right?" I ask her, she nods as she looks to the medical tent. "But we don't have enough to fully cure you." Brenda complains, I look to the medical tent. "Then I guess I'm doomed!" I say plopping down on the ground, Brenda sits down next to me.

"Your not doomed, when I got infected the symptoms got me way quicker than you. Just like Mary said back at The Right Arm, it's not the same for everyone. We just have to keep an eye on you." She says, I roll up my pant leg again and look at the bandaging. "You're right, but promise not to tell anyone." I say to her, she nods and I give her a quick hug before rolling down my pant leg and walking off.

~~Time Skip~~

Vince had gathered us around the bonfire, he looked at all of us before beginning. "We have come a long way together, so many have sacrificed so much to make this place possible. Your friends, your family. So here's to the ones who couldn't be here, here's to the friends we lost. This place is for you, it's for all of us. But this, this is for them. So in your own time, in your own way, come make your peace. And welcome to The Safe Haven!"

Everyone had clapped in joy, Minho gave me a hug as I look to the big stone in front of all of us. I took a quick sip of my drink as I watched tons of people go and put names on the stone. "Who are you going to put up there?" Minho asks me, I look at my drink before looking to him. "Newt." I say, he smiles and begins to laugh. 

"What's so funny?" I say beginning to smile, "I just knew you were gonna put him up there." He says, I roll my eyes and look back to the stone. Tones of names already on it. 

As I watch everyone put names on the stone, Brenda comes up to me with something in her hand. "I forgot to give this to you earlier, you had it around your neck." She says giving it to me, I take it and as she walks away I remember who gave this to me. Newt. 

I play around with it until I notice something, the top comes off. There's something inside here. I quickly take off the lid and look inside, I dump out whatever it is into my hand to see a piece of paper folded enough just to fit inside that tiny thing. 

I unfold it to see it's two papers, I look to Minho who was now getting up and heading towards the stone. So now that I was alone, I read it.

Dear Y/N,

I know that things have changed, and I bet by now I'm not with you. But let me tell you one thing, the minute you came up into the box I couldn't stop staring at you. You were just a small innocent girl, shaking in the corner terrified. When I took you out the box I watched your eyes, your beautiful E/C eyes. And once they locked with mine I had a feeling I've never felt before, love. I never thought that I would've been with you, you were the perfect girl. Your flowing H/C hair, your E/C eyes, your body, your personality, and that smile. That smile that says everything is going to be fine. And I followed that smile for as long as I remember, I loved that smile for as long as I remember. And I loved you, for as long as I can remember.

When you got taken away from me I couldn't take it, I felt like I was going insane. And I was, but that virus didn't stop me. That virus didn't stop me from getting the love of my life back, and once I got you back...it was different. WICKED did something to you that they never should've done, and I don't know if they're gone now but I was grateful when you were...you. Y/N I love you! And I hope that you're having the time of your life now, but every time you think of me. I want you to know, I will always be there for you. Cause I love you.

I was in tears now, I quickly folded up the two papers, put them back in the small container, and put it around my neck. As I saw Minho coming back I wiped away my tears and smiled at him, "I think it's your turn." He says holding his hand out to me, I laugh, "so you're escorting me now?" I ask him. "I might be, I mean, I am the best!" He says running his hands through his hair. I laugh once again before following him to the stone, I looked at all the names on the stone already. There were so many.

I then got handed a knife and carefully carved in, Newt. I then handed the knife to the next person as I joined Minho. When we were walking back to the seats a voice called us, we look around until we spotted Aris waving us over. 

We ran up to him, and once close enough I realized his hair was wet. "Guys follow me!" He said walking off into the woods, I gave Minho a confused look but he was already following him. I sighed but followed after them.

Aris soon led us to a big pond with most of everyone there, Thomas, Brenda, Harriet, Sonya, Gally, and Frypan. "Oh I'm in!" Minho said taking his shirt and shorts off, he then jumped in splashing me. "Hey!" I scream at him, I then noticed Brenda walking to me and I remembered my bandaging.

"Please tell me it's waterproof!" I whispered to her, "it is but just don't be jumping around too much." She whispers back to me before going back into the water, I quickly take off my shirt and pants. And then walk into the water sitting beside Minho.

"Aris you coming in?" Sonya asks, "oh no I'm good!" He says sitting on a rock nearby, "oh come on Aris!" I say splashing him. Everyone then begins to chant Aris, and he gives me one last look before taking off his jacket, shirt, and pants. And then he comes in sitting next to Sonya.

We were in the water for about an hour, and it was very relaxing until. "Who wants to play truth or dare?" Minho asks, everyone gives him a scared look.
