The flashing lights of red, white, and blue blinded the people who swarmed the crime scene. The police escorted a rather tall man into a S.W.A.T vehicle, his arms tightly and securely cuffed behind his broad back. His head drooped down to gaze at the sidewalk, his face showing slightly as he clenched his jaws in disdain.
To the side, a man with a rather short stature stood, wrapped in a thick trench coat to protect his body from the frigid weather. He scribbled in a notebook, adjusting the reading glasses upon his icy nose before going up the pad, clicking his pen, and tucking the materials inside his coat. His blue pigmented gray eyes glared at the scene before him, narrowing them as he let out a light scoff.
"Another mystery solved," a low voice murmured behind the man. "How does it feel, Detective Ackerman?"
The icy man turned his harsh glare to the significantly taller man in black, his long chiseled face glimmering in the police lights. He pressed his lips in a tight line.
"Just like any other case I solved, I guess," the detective grunted.
"Oh, but this wasn't just another case, Levi," the taller man chuckled, running a giant pale hand over his slick blond hair. "You and I both know that."
Levi ground his teeth together, blinking hard eyes at him before turning back to the scene, his face blank but slightly annoyed.
"He was a serial killer, Erwin." Levi stuffed his hands into his pockets. "The only thing about him that struck to me as unusual was his method of killing."
"Carving knives," Erwin grunted. "Some psycho crap going on in that guy's head, that's for sure."
"People do all kinds of crazy shit these days, Chief," Levi muttered. "This one's no exception."
"I guess." Erwin shrugged, taking a sip from his coffee cup.
"His particular style of murder resulted in his downfall," Levi went on. "He mutilated his victims first, giving us clues of his next prey."
The detective's frosty face met the cowering and shivering figure of a young woman, the killer's surviving victim Levi had saved with just seconds to spare. Her dark carmel hair was frazzled and her face was wild with tears; the ambulance tended to her traumatic needs.
"It's like he wanted to get caught."
"I wonder why..." Erwin inquired, scratching his scruffy pale chin.
Levi growled, clenching his hands inside his pockets into tight fists. He was silent for a while though, the angry breaths he let out resulting in thick white clouds of steam.
"Yes," the detective snarled grimly. "He had a loving wife and a son who adored him. I still have no solid reason why he would start such an act."
Levi closed his stormy eyes, exhaling deeply.
"Actually, I do know."
Erwin turned to the other man.
"Ackerman?"
"Mental illnesses don't have to have a reason in order to infect someone," Levi growled. "Those shits just do what they want to whoever they want; whenever they want."
The detective found himself looking at the woman again, her hazel eyes bloodshot and her fingers trembling still from the fear. Blood trickled down the corner of her mouth, her cheek severely bruised with a massive slash stretching from her left temple down to the tip of her chin. The paramedics took her away, wrapping the wounded girl tightly in a brightly colored blanket, draped over her shoulders.
"At least you saved innocent lives tonight, Levi," Erwin murmured, placing a gentle hands on the man's shoulder. "There could have been more that could have gotten into this mess if you waited to catch him any longer."
"We're lucky he only killed three people," Levi spat. "But that's three too many!"
"Levi," Erwin said firmly.
The detective next to him had managed to squeeze out a single tear, his jaws tightly clenched in rage. He flashed a threatening glare towards the chief.
"You knew it was your father the entire time...didn't you?"
Levi was quiet again, his thin brows creased and his lips pulled down into a fierce scowl. He started after the police car that suddenly roared to life, driving off with Kenny the Ripper sitting grimly in the back seats.
"I wanted to see if he would change," Levi finally whispered darkly. "He is my father, after all..."
