{I do not own Divergent, Insurgent, or Allegiant. I am not Veronica Roth, nor am I pretending to be Veronica Roth.}

I sit, staring at her in pure shock.

"Pardon, my result is wh-"

"Dauntless, dear. Of course, you could choose any one of the factions, but I really think your personality and traits should influence your choice."

I cough.

"Yeah, um, of course. Well, thank you."

The rest of the school day was a blur.

I walked home alone, strolling down the sidewalks and past tall houses. I come to a stop at my house, coming inside and running up the steps to my room.

I lay on my bed and think, for what must be hours because I hear my mom come in. I decide to busy myself with something, so I tell her I'll make dinner and I do. I make everyone's favorite pasta and put together some quick pudding. A worrisome voice in the back of my head asks if I'm doing this because it is possibly my last dinner here.

No, no way. I'll probably just end up staying anyways. Dauntless? Me? No.

My father arrives from work and we eat dinner, silent as we scoop food onto our plates. My mother is the first one to talk.

"Sweetheart, how was the test? You seem rather quiet."

"Normally am." I mutter, twirling spaghetti onto my fork.

"Honey, I just tho-"

My dad quickly comes to my defense.

"She's always been a quiet kid. I'm sure the test was fine, Maria."

I nod gratefully, finishing my dinner and running up the steps. I lay down, falling asleep quickly, probably my subconscious avoiding the subject of Choosing Day.

I wake up quickly, and my mother tells me to get dressed because Ariana's family is picking me up soon. I dress in a white sweater and black pants, eat a muffin and wait in front of the door.

They stop in front of my house in their sleek black car and I slide into the backseat, joining Ariana and her older brother Jacob.

"Thank you for driving me." I force out, the only words I've said all day.

"Never a problem, Lilian."

We drive through the city to the Hub.

I walk in and follow the crowd. It, as always, is separated into 5 noticeably different sections. One blue. One red and yellow. One black. One gray. And one white and black. I make my way to the Candor section and sit beside my parents.

My mother hugs me and my father pats my shoulder supportively. I tense at both. There is no doubt in their minds that I'll be staying.

Five leaders, one of each faction, give a small speech and the ceremony begins. I feel bad for Ariana. Her name begins with an A.

When her name is called she confidently struts to the center of the room, pricks her finger, and drops her blood into the Candor bowl. Her parents' cheers make my ears burn and she rejoins them gracefully.

L comes nearer and nearer, and with every name called I tense up a little more. Before I know it, a girl named Kelly is called and then a boy named Lake.

I shudder. My dad pats my shoulder again.

"Lilian Walker." It takes me a moment to separate this name from the others being called. I am Lilian Walker, and Lilian Walker is me. I quickly rise from my seat. My chest feels heavier than before my test yesterday. I turn around quickly.

"I love you, Mom." I hug her and kiss her cheek.

A golf ball forms in my throat.

"I love you, Dad." I do the same to him and hold back tears.

"Lilian Walker?"

I blush and scurry to the center of the room. All eyes are on me now.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite leader hands me the small knife. I thank her quietly and carefully cut my finger. I take another deep breath. My heart is beating so loud I can hear it. I feel myself shaking. How long has it been? This is just humiliating. I walk over to the burning coals. I drop my blood in. I hear the intake of breaths in the Candor area. I hear whooping and cheering from the Dauntless area, though. Somehow their rowdiness comforts me. I take a seat in the front row of the Dauntless section, where the transfers sit.

A girl whispers in my ear.

"Hey, I know you."

"Christina?"

"Yup. Candor to Dauntless. You and me both, kid. Our parents will probably go join the Our-Kids-Are-Traitors club."

I stifle laughter. I feel better now. I think she does, too.

After a few minutes my eyes drift over to my parents. My mom is holding back tears. My dad is patting her shoulder.

Christina's looking too. I pat her shoulder. She seems to forget when a boy named Will transfers.

"Oooohhhhhhhh. Someone's blushing."

She slaps my arm playfully, and I laugh.

The ceremony comes to a close. We get out of our seats, and follow the Dauntless. They're running. An Abnegation transfer obviously looks very terrified I grab her hand and run beside her. She looks at me gratefully.

A Dauntless leader covered in tattoos and piercings tells us as the train approaches that we will be jumping on. The trains, evidently, do not stop.

And now my life as a Dauntless begins.
