Like the title says, not everyone lives in outer fucking space.
In almost every The 100 fanfic the oc is from the ark and is in the sky box for stealing. Also they are best friends with Clarke and their mom is probably a council member or a nurse/doctor.
I'm not saying that your oc can't be one of the prisoners from the ark I'm just saying that there's more types of people to chose from.
There's the grounders, the reapers, ice nation and more which means you don't have to be limited to making ur oc a prisoner on the ark.
BuT
I've also seen a lot of stories where the oc is a grounder that gets captured by the 100 and then falls in love with Bellamy which I feel is gonna become a cliché soon.
But what I haven't see is where the oc lives in mount wether and helps the 100 rescue their friends.
