Valerie had always seen hope as a sort of curse. She stumbled across it in many places, in the empty words of people, in the skies outside, in the stories she dwelled upon, in dreams and most unfortunately, in her heart. She tried to block it out, she tried to ignore the light disrupting the darkness she had grown so accustomed to but it never worked. After all as the old saying went, where there is life, there is hope.
For her, hope made things worse, much more unbearable. She much preferred the days she was numb, expecting nothing but what she had grown used to. Though there were times when a little part of her expected things to get better and every time it turned out that they didn't, it hurt even worse.
It was just like experiencing a bolt of lightning flash it's abrupt light over everything then disappear just as quickly, leaving one submerged in the previous darkness.
Valerie had expected the day of her eleventh birthday to start like any other, but no there was that disgusting light in her again.
She hoped she wouldn't see the tired face when she looked into the mirror, she hoped it wouldn't be those swollen puffy eyes that glared back at her but boy, was she wrong.
