Everything changes the moment you start seeing yourself differently

Valerie woke up feeling quite strange the next morning. First, she attributed it to physical exhaustion from all that running she had done to escape the Gryffindors last night but still, it didn't seem to be the only thing.
The answer came to her with a little stab.
She had thrown the mirror away.
"It was for the best," she told herself sternly. "Don't go looking for it."
Why had she done it though? How had she thrown it away so easily when she hadn't been able to all these years?
Valerie had often tried to make sense of why she couldn't let go of her mother. She was a horrible person, the epitome of a bad parent and barely anything came out of her mouth that didn't make her feel bad or incompetent.
But that wasn't all she was. There was so much more to her, at least for Valerie. She wasn't the loving mother the girl would have much preferred but she was one, nevertheless. She did care about her, in her own twisted way. She was always there for Valerie, even after death, even if in not a way the girl would have liked.
Her ghost had preserved mainly the worst sides of her yet Valerie had long decided that she would rather keep her mother's most bitter parts than none at all.
