The Asantes practice the extended family system. They always want the family to be united at any point in time. The Asantes believe that from the day a person is born to the day he or she dies and also after the person's death, he or she belongs to the family. That is no matter what happens to you, your family is responsible for your wellbeing. When you're born, it's their responsibility to give you a name,to usher you into puberty, to give you out or help you to marry, and lastly to burry you when you die. These responsibilities of the family cannot be shirk with anyone outside the family circle. So the rites of passage of life according to the Asantes begins with  naming ceremony.

Asantes practice the matrilineal lineage of inheritance. In this case every child that is born belongs to the mothers family. They inherits from their mother's family.
The parents of the child are supposed to decide on the name they will give to the child.
In Ashanti Kingdom, every child has a soul name ( kradin) . This name is base on the day you were born.

After that the two families ( that is the father's and mother's family) will gather in the family's compound.
The ceremony begins with a prayer or pouring of libation. The aunty of the baby will give the name to the officiating elder.
In Asante, babies are named after individuals who have lived exemplary lives and good influence on the community.
The elder will take the baby onto his or her arms. The elder will mention the name three times. He then mention it again for the gathering to say after him.
Then he takes a glass of water. He dips his pointing finger into it and drops it in the mouth of baby three times while saying"  se wo se nsuo aa nsuo " ( when you say water let it be water). He then dips his finger into a glass of local gin saying "  se wo se nsa aa nsa( when you say it's a drink let it be a drink) . This is  done to instill truthfulness into the child.
The child is given back to the mother. The elder hereby present the pieces of cloth to the mother. They also give the baby clothing and money from the father to the mother of the child.
After the presentation , the way is paved for all the loved ones to also bring their presents to the child and the mother.
The Godmother or Godfather of the baby gives the baby a special gift as a life capita. This is called   DwatireThis money is seen to be the money the child is going to use to start up his or her life.
Many well wishers will come in to congratulate the mother and her family.
