Chapter Six

We both looked at each other, obviously freaked out. Since we both saw it, that meant that I wasn't going crazy and seeing shit. Something- actually, scratch that. Someone had been eavesdropping on our conversation.

I gulped.

We were in deep shit.

I knew I should tell my father about what had just occurred, but there was going to be no way of explaining it without him sticking his nose into what Elaina and I just talked about.

We agreed to not say anything, and we returned to the lounge where everyone else was.

Upon entering, my eyes were immediately drawn in by a green gaze. I felt the butterflies in my stomach flutter upon seeing my mate, Dominic.

And then Adrian stepped in front of me, making me meet his eyes. His eyes were different than Dominic's. His eyes weren't one of his prominent features, unlike Dominic's, but they were a glistening chocolate brown. The eyes were different, though. Like, enchanting in their own way. The type that could hypnotise you, leaving you in a daze.

"Go out with me tomorrow night?" He asked, flashing me a dazzling smile. He had his own charm. It wasn't as sexy or alluring as Dominic's, but it was a boy-next door kind of sweetness.

I shouldn't compare every man to my mate, but I couldn't help but notice all the differences. I didn't think any other person would compare to Dominic.

I felt compelled to say 'yes'; obligated, even. It would put my father at ease and get him off my case. A small smile graced my lips. "Sure."

I couldn't help but notice a glimmer of hope in my father's eyes. Alpha Roman even looked... victorious? He shot Dominic a smirk.

Staring at my mate across the room, I couldn't help but feel nauseous. Dominic had a stony look on his face, but I could tell it was a façade to keep from showing how upset he was at me agreeing.

Being a werewolf had its perks, such as having good hearing abilities. But at this moment, I wished I didn't have it at all.

Phoebe was touching Dominic's arm suggestively.

"How about you take me out too?" she purred.

The nerve on that bitc-. Okay, calm down, Selena. She doesn't know that that's your mate she's trying to sink her claws into. I was trying my hardest to resist throwing anything and everything silver on her that I could get my hands on.

My body tensed. What hurt the most was that Dominic seemed to be mesmerized by her sultry gaze. I felt my heart drop when he agreed to go out with her.

I couldn't stop thinking about my date tonight. Sure, it had probably hurt Dominic just as bad when I said yes, but he needed to understand that it was something that I had to do. What's one life to live loveless when it would save countless werewolves and civilians from more vampire attacks?

Same as yesterday, my father asked me to make a good impression on Adrian.

He handed me a debit card. "Buy yourself nice dresses and shoes. I don't know how long he'll be in town for, but you need to make a good impression. Make your family proud."

I immediately knew Elaina was going to be ecstatic about going clothes shopping with me. "Yes, father."

He turned, beginning to walk away. "Oh, and one more thing, Selena... try not to use the money on more books."

I rolled my eyes. "But I thought knowledge was power, father."

Over 20 huge, heavy shopping bags later, Elaina and I decided to call it quits and head home.

"Call me when you get home and don't skip out on any details" she gave me a grin. Elaina had been thrilled to go shopping, especially because I always refused to go dress shopping. All the gorgeous ones I owned were what she had gifted to me.

I had purchased at least thirty dresses from various designers, a few designer handbags, and some heels. I shivered. The thought of heels already had my feet and legs aching. I could barely walk in sneakers without tripping, let alone heels.

Adrian hadn't mentioned where he was taking me, so I decided to keep it smart casual by putting on a navy blue lacy mini cocktail dress. It clung to my body and accentuated my long legs. I wasn't freakishly tall by any means but being 5'10" made me have legs that went on for days.

Knowing that it wouldn't be a clever idea to immediately wear one of my new heels without wearing them in first, I put on some black wedges I found in my shoe rack and headed outside to search for Dorian.

His favourite place on the property was on a bench under the shady oak tree in the backyard. He said that our mother used to read to him there when he was a child.

I found Dorian there staring deeply into the gardens, lost in thought. Just as I sat down next to him, he began to talk.

"It's him, isn't it?" he asked. It was a bit vague, but I immediately understood him.

I gasped, not expecting him to have figured it out so soon. "How did you know?"

He gave a small sad smile. "I used to look at her that way too. It became a bit obvious when Adrian wrapped his arms around you... Dominic looked like he wanted to tear Adrian limb from limb."

"Do you think father knows?"

He shook his head. "If he did, he'd be telling you to string both men along in case the alliance with the Sun Wolves doesn't go through... I know he's your mate and he's an Alpha but he doesn't have the army of warriors that the Sun Wolves have. Plus, we need them because the vampires have been recently attacking much more." Dorian furrowed his brows. "You're my sister and I want the best for you. As much as I'd like to see you happy, father's the Alpha and as such, he commands whatever he pleases."

At 6pm sharp, there was a knock at the front door.

I didn't have to open the door to know that it was Adrian. I could smell his scent of something overwhelmingly sweet, warm fur, and the beach.

I opened the grand door and greeted him. Adrian immediately led me to his car, a Mercedes GT Coupe. The drive to the restaurant was awkward and tense. Neither of us had tried to make small talk.

We arrived at the restaurant and the maître d' showed us to our table.

A few tables away, I spotted Dominic on a date with Phoebe.
