I sat in my mother's room, listening to the heart monitor. She was sick with cancer and was getting worse each day. I smiled and rambled on and on about Kitty, my month old kitten. I sat up and held her hand before jumping from the door opening.

"Hey kiddo" Jack said as he fluffed up my hair. I smiled at him as he placed the sodas down, he was my step father but I always thought of him as a real father. My dad left my mom when she was first diagnosed with cancer. Jack has been a big help after he joined our little family and I couldn't think him enough.

"Hey Jack" I heard my mothers soft voice. I looked at her with concern but she just shook it off. "Bell you should be resting" he said as he sat next to her. "Don't worry dear I'll be fine" I looked at her as she talked "mom please you know what the doctor said" I told her. She shook her head as she spoke "Charlie I don't have much time left" she raised her hand and placed it on my cheek.

I listened to the radio that played in the little room "Sunshine" I mumbled looking into her once bright eyes. "You make me happy when sky's are grey. You'll never know dear how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away" even when she was sick she would always sing. I felt my body freeze as I held onto her hand. "Mom don't leave" I whispered as I watched her eyes close "please stay away!" Before I could do anything I was rushed and pushed out of the way.

I listened to the heart monitor flat line as my dad took me out of the room. I tried to stay I just wanted to say something but he wouldn't let me and so we drove home in silence. Once I was in my room my body shook as I let out sobs, tears and a bit of screams "why her! Why can't it be me!" I yelled at the top of my lungs.

That was the night that Sunshine played on the radio and happy memories replayed themselves.
