Eight years ago.
It was almost midterm break in queen's college Lagos, they were celebrating a feast. The dancers were almost rounding up their performance which quite impressed the chairman, who had whispered to the principal, he will pay anything to have them perform at his son's welcome home party.
"Well, most of them aren't students of this school. They are hired dancers. Just two are my students, they'll be going on midterm soon." She whispered, knowing there was no way, she was giving her little girls to an old Casanova.
He smiled sheepishly, offering to donate towards the sports development, he'd bluntly refused before.
"Hey girl!"
Young Angela, who was only 16, startled, turning around. She currently was in the locker room changing from dance cloths. She was one of the students who had performed on stage with the hired dancers.
She swallowed hard, at the sight of the company, she suddenly had. The skinny wild-looking girl with a grey contact lens on. She looked weird.
"Hi!" Angela forced herself into her day wear.
"You were great out there, you know." The weird girl added.
Angela glanced through her reluctantly. She appeared older than her and dark-skinned tone too, her grey eyes were lovely but dreadful, more like wild. Angela didn't understand, how she made her so uncomfortable and excited at the same time, giving she was pleased talking to her. Angela recognized her quite well, she was one of the lead dancers, one of the few girls anyway. Most were male.
"Thanks." Angela licked her dry lips.
"So what do you think about making an extra K?"
"What? Sorry" Angela found her words and expression slightly perverted. Her gestures, fake smiles at intervals and body movement, she occasionally swung her broad hips like she had no control over them.
"C'mon girl." She ran her hand through her face, and to her hair, which was trimmed low.
"We have this show, we'll be leaving for, at Victoria Island. We will be performing with Ted."
"Who's that?" She pulled herself from her touch as a classmate of hers walked past. The last thing, she wanted was to be tagged a lesbian.
She fluttered her eyes. " Oh Ted is the dancer, Tex-Jackson, I mean."
"Tex-Jackson." She added with so much excitement, which the other girl noticed.
"I could join you guys? You're offering?" Angela added interest picked.
She smiled sheepishly. "My name is Tobi. You welcome aboard, girl!" she added working away.
"Tobi." Angela called out and she stopped short. "Do I get paid?"
"Thought I mentioned that." She smirked. "Well girl, you're damn pretty, you get paid for being pretty, you get paid for being a dancer."
Angela got lost again. How did she get to start talking like that, even her accent? She probably just moved back to Lagos, else that Yankee scallywag behavior would never have stuck. Angela thought.
"Angela is my name."
"Hi Angel, we'll be leaving tonight. Show is tomorrow." She winked and walked away.
Well, she wouldn't seat around waiting for her mother to come to pick her up tomorrow.
When all she had to do was do the one thing she enjoyed doing, then go home after the show. The fact, she didn't really have a friend in school made her leaving school with those dancers easier.
