Tonight was Friday, the night where I get to go to Sebastian's prom, then night where I get to meet his friends for the first time. I was hoping they would like me, considering all the empty threats I made towards them in the past.

I had put together another Lavek original: a blue, strapless water color gown with my favorite draping tecnique. I had loosely curled my hair, applied make-up to compliment my fair skin, and slipped on a pair of black heels, and topped it off with a little barrette in my hair. I couldn't believe I was going to my third high-school prom. People who don't know me would assume the worst, but I don't care. Why? Because night, I am going to have a wonderful night with my boyfriend.

Just as I finished applying my lipstick, Charlotte poked her head into my room.

"Hello there Princess, may I come in?" she asked.

"Yes you may." I replied with a chuckle.

"Let me have a look at you." she took my hands in hers as she looked me over, a smile of admiration on her face.

"Oh my god, I think this is your best prom look yet." she squealed.

"Considering this is my third prom. I had junior, now senior, now I'm a graduate and still going to another prom." I said, thinking of the irony.

"Well for your third prom in a row, you look magnificent. I have something for you." she said. I turned to give her a confused look.

"Didn't you already give me a gift for my first prom?" I asked.

"I did yeah, I know you loved the locket, but you know this afternoon I was thinking about you, and how you're all grown up. And I figure you're ready to receive this gift." she said.

"Alright, what is it?" I asked. Charlotte pulled out a small box from her pocket and handed it to me. Inside, was a beautiful diamond ring.

"Holy crap! Did you buy this for me?" I asked.

"I didn't. I never bought it. Your father did. It was your mother's wedding ring." oh, that makes this entire situation completely different. I snapped the box shut and gave it back to her.

"I don't want anything from that woman." I said as coldly as I could.

"Reese, I understand you're angry at her, but she's still your mother. She does love you."

"Love me!? If she loved me, wouldn't she try to protect me? Wouldn't she file divorce on that monster and leave him? She didn't love me, she never did. She just let herself wallow away in-in alcohol. And after ten years of foster-care and depression, she wants me to forgive her? No way, not gonna happen!" I snapped.

"Try to look at this from her view. She was very, very sick, and she needed help. She's getting that help now, and she wants you to forgive her for her mistakes." Charlotte said.

"You're sounding a lot like a therapist." I replied.

"I hope so. Reese, you are not a little girl anymore, you're nineteen, soon to be twenty and going to one of the best schools in New York! That wouldn't have happened if your birth parents didn't put you on this earth in the first place." she said.

"Oh please, you know damn well they didn't plan me. I was 'an accident'. Remember?" I asked.

"There are no 'accidents'. Everything happens for a reason, and this is one of the so called 'accidents' that has turned her life around. She's becoming a young woman, she's independant. But she's still as hard-headed as her father. And I don't mean Ryan."

"Kay, I really didn't need to hear that." I said.

"I'm sorry that I'm hurting you right now Reese, but it's important that you listen to this-"

"All I want tonight, is to go to this party with my boyfriend. I want to have a wonderful time and not think about my parents. I hate them, and I can't ever forgive them. What happened in the past, happened, and no matter how hard I try, I'm never going to forget what they did to me. I could've been corpse in a dumpster if I didn't say anything. They would've killed me before I even turned eighteen. So yeah, I get that you want me to take pity on an alcoholic and a convict, but I'll pass." I said. Charlotte sniffled and nodded.

"Alright, I respect that. You're not a child anymore you're an adult, and you're free to make any decision you want. I won't force you." she said.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you upset." I gave her a hug.

"I know dear, I know. Just go tonight and have fun. But be back before midnight or there will be blood. Your boyfriend's blood to emphasis." she said.

"Got it, I love you Charlotte."

"I love you too Reese. Be happy."

That's the thing though, when you've had a life like mine, it's kind of hard to be happy. What with the flashbacks and the nightmares and the scars you see everytime you look at yourself naked in the mirror. Not many people in Lima understand that, even if they can, it's hard to talk about it in public. Abuse victims are delicate, I know, hard to imagine me and 'delicate', but that's just the barriers and the masks we create. Humans are possesive creatures, who protect and are protected. We love, and we are loved. We're not perfect, that's definetely true, but I think to every awful human in this world, there are a handful of decent people to over-take them. It's a fascinating, yet scary thought, and it's true.
