I take the steps up the porch, joining the Sheriff and the others. The Sheriff's pulling at the door, but it won't open. He gives up and gets ready to kick it down.
"Wait, I see something," I say, squinting through the window. I see two blobs fighting on the ground, the curtain obscuring most of my view.
Then there's a sound like thunder. For one second it feels like somebody punched me in the gut. The next thing I know, I'm lying on the porch. There's a lot of noise, then quiet. I look up and see Douglass, a panicked look in his eyes.
"Shots fired, shots fired! Officer down!" somebody's shouting. I try to sit up, but Dana's telling me to stay down. Brae shouts something, and Doc reaches through the shattered glass and pulls the curtain back.
Please, God. I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I don't want to die.
I look to my left and I see my daughter. She's crying, asking me to come home. Then she's gone. I don't want to die.
