(y/n)'s pov

it was july 30, at 11:58 pm. i was under my bed waiting for my birthday to be over. i had drew a cake on the bottom of my bed in pencil. it wasn't that i didn't have a cake for my birthday (mrs. warren made everyone one on their birthday), it was a cake i "blew out" on july 31, at 12:00 am exactly to celebrate the end of my birthday. and by "blow out" i mean i just erased the flames off the candles.

i hated my birthday. it reminded me of my mother. and when i thought of my mother, i thought about how she didn't want me. could she be dead? probably, but probably not. i mean, why would someone drop me off with a card that has a name and a birthday, and not just give me too a family member?

it didn't make sense.

and then the timer on my watch went off. it was 12:00 am on july 31.

i whispered to myself, "happy end of birthday!" i erased the flames off my candle then just lied there for a few minutes. i thought about the man i met, albus dumbledore.

when he told me i was a witch, i fainted. i mean, who wouldn't? i'm a witch, who can do magic, who gets to go to magic school. mr. dumbledore, who i should be calling professor dumbledore, is the headmaster. he explained everything to me, about witches and wizards and magic. apparently, mrs. warren knew all about magic, because when you work/own an orphanage, you get magic kids a lot, but she hadn't gotten one in years.

professor dumbledore said that either today or tomorrow (july 31 or august 1), a really tall guy named rubeus hagrid and a kid around my age are going to take me shopping for school stuff. magic school stuff. i still can't believe i'm magic.

i got out from under the bed and got under the covers. i stared at my ceiling for a while, thinking about magic and boarding schools. i thought of tall guys and kids my age that could be my friends one day. i thought of my parents, who might have been magic, too. i thought of the weird things i made happen, like the glass and the flowers and the windows and the mime. and i thought of that poor, glass duck that kenny broke. i thought of so many things, until i finally fell asleep.

————

they didn't come on july 31.

when i woke up on august 1, it was 8:30. i got out of bed and immediately ran towards the window. when i saw no one was there, i sighed and started to head downstairs for breakfast. when the tall man and the boy my age didn't show up yesterday, i was pretty disappointed.
i was hoping they would be here by now, but i was wrong.

as usual, i was tripped down the stairs. i walked to the kitchen and saw ava eating cereal. i said good morning and she smiled at me and continued eating. i checked the mail board, but there was nothing there. i turned around and got a pan out of one of the drawers.

"hey ava, i'm making eggs, do you want any?" i asked. ava looked up.

"yes please!" she said.

"you know, for being four, you have the biggest appetite," i said, and she laughed.

"i hope you like scrambled, because it's the only kind i know how to make."

when i finished the eggs, ava got some plates and i put the eggs on the plates. when we finished eating, we started doing dishes, with me washing and with  her drying and putting away.

as i was finishing up, the doorbell rang.

"i'll get it!" i yelled. i dried my hands and went to the front door. when i opened it, i said (without looking at the people outside) what i always heard mrs. warren say.
