Light Box

"Soon I have to go see a friend" Steve said as they were eating food.
Silver poked at her sandwich. "Who?"
"Her name's Nancy" Steve said. "She's really special to me"
Silver smiled. "Can I come?" She asked. "Meet Nancy?"
"I'm sorry, Silver, it's just gonna be Nancy and I tonight" He said looking at the ground.
Silver sighed. "I under...stand"
Steve shrugged. "I guess you could come but stay in the car"
"Really?" Silver asked happily. "I can come?"
Steve nodded. "My parents are coming home, they probably would freak out if they saw a stranger in my bedroom" His gaze turned serious. "Just stay in the car"
"Hurt me?" She asked sadly.
"What? No, I'm your friend" He said. "I would never do that"

He parked up at a different house. It was smaller than his house but it was still nice. The sky had gone black and stars twinkled in the darkness. Steve turned to Silver. "Stay here, okay?"
She nodded. "Of course"
Steve jumped out of the car and sneaked across the yard. He walked to a small wall which he tried to get up. He squirmed his way up it but fell down again. A small pale boy on a bike looked at him and Steve tried to act casual. The boy grimaced and rode away. Steve sighed and tried to climb up again.
"Need help?" Silver asked behind him.
He whipped around. "I thought I told you to stay in the car"
"You can't get up" She said pointing at the wall. "I help"
He sighed. "Silver I don't think you can..."
Silver made a block of light and placed it down on the ground. "Help you"
Steve looked at the block of light and put his foot on it. Surprisingly it was solid and held him up. He stood on it and clambered onto the roof. Silver clicked her fingers and the light dissapeared. Steve smiled at the girl.
"Go to the car, now" He whispered.
Silver nodded and headed off. She climbed back in the passenger side and sat down.

Steve tapped lightly on the window above him. A girl about the same age as Silver opened the window. She had pale skin and dark long hair. Silver looked at her hair and wished she had long hair too. The girl laughed and let Steve in. She shut the window and closed the curtains.  Silver sighed and leaned back into the seat.

She screamed and struggled in the two men's grip. They held her tight and dragged her across the ground. All she wore was a hospital gown that was stained with blood. Tear streamed from her eyes.
"Papa!" She yelled at the older man.
He stood behind her with his arms crossed. He stared hard the the girl and dissapeared behind a corner. Ten cried and yelled. She focused on white hot energy. The men yelled as she burned their arms. They let her go and she scrambled away. They ran after her as she tore down the corridor, she wasn't going back in the dark room. She fell over and slid right into one of them. They grabbed her by the shoulders and she yelped. She screamed as they hit her with their batons. Soon Papa came rushing towards them. He yelled at them and grabbed Ten. She looked up at him with her pale eyes.
"Papa?" She asked.
"It's me, Ten, you did a good job" He said picking her up.

"Silver!" Steve yelled.
She jolted up from the seat, almost wacking her head on the roof. Silver looked around saw Steve sitting in the driver's seat.
"Are you okay?" He asked. "You were yelling and thrashing around"
She controlled her breathing and looked at him. "I'm fine"
Steve sighed and turned on the car. He backed it up and pulled out of the driveway. It was raining heavily now and the water streaked window Silver could see four figures walking to the back of the house. She tried looked closer but they hurried away.
"Seriously though, I thought you were having a panic attack" Steve said glancing at her.
Silver looked at him. "Sometimes" She began. "I'm back there"
"Where the bad people are?" Steve asked.
She nodded. "They hurt me" She frowned. "They hurt you"
"Hurt me?"
"They find me with you" She said. "They hurt"
Steve sighed. "Well, they're not going to find you" He assured her. "You're not going back there"
Silver smiled. "You're good, Steve"
Steve returned the smile. Soon they were back at his house and they went inside. Steve stopped when his mother was standing right in front of him.
"Hey, mum" Steve said slowly.
His mums focus was on the strange pale eyed girl. "Who's this?"
"This is, uh..." Steve mumbled. "Silver, my girlfriend"
His mother smiled. "Oh Steve, we never get to meet your girlfriends" She turned to the girl. "I haven't seen you before, are you new to town?"
Silver nodded slowly. Steve slung an arm around her shoulder. "Her parents are having a divorce so I thought it would be okay if she stayed with me for awhile" He lied. "Is that okay?"
"Of course, that is unfortunate Silver" She smiled. "Silver, what an unusual name"
"Her parents named her that because of her eyes" Steve said walking up the stairs with Silver. "I think it's quite pretty"
"Well, it's nice meeting you Silver" His mother said to the girl.
Silver nodded. "You too"
"Stay as long as you need" She said and turned back to the living room.
Steve sighed and walked into his room. He shut the door behind him and slunk down on his bed. The rain was lashing against the windows and thunder was rumbling in the distance. Every now and then lightening would strike making Silver jump.
"Girlfriend?" Silver asked after a while.
Steve looked at her. "It's like a friend but different"
"Is that because I'm a girl?" She sat down on the bed next to him.
He shook his head. "A girlfriend, or a boyfriend, is someone that you care for"
"You care for me" Silver pointed out.
Steve chuckled. "We're not girlfriend and boyfriend" He said. "Nancy is my girlfriend"
"You lied..." She spoke softly. "To your mum?"
He nodded. "I think saying that I met this girl with powers in the woods and that I have to look after is kind of weird"
Silver smiled again. "You know, you look nice when you smile" Steve said.
The comment made Silver blush. She had never met a boy her age before and she started to feel something that she hadn't felt before. She couldn't lay her finger on what it was, maybe she'll ask Steve later.
