What-何(なに?) Nani/Nan(i)
Actually, they use "なに" for saying "What?/What is it" for friends)...for formalities they say "何ですか?"but it is pronounced as "nan(i)[silent i] desuka"which means "What is it?"

When-いつ
for casualities you could only use "いつ"..but for formalities,use "いつですか"meaning,When is it?
