"I've just read your report on the Danny Quinn situation," Phillip says, walking over to Matt and I near the ADD. "Very thorough."
"Thanks," we say at the same time.
"Lost in time for over a year, finally gets back home, and then gone again within a day. Not entirely rational behaviour, is it?"
"He went after his brother, what's irrational about that?" I ask, venom in my voice.
"Of course, you'd know all about it wouldn't you. Spending a year through them yourself...your mother for eight. She left you when you were what, ten? You tried to warn your Dad about anomalies but he didn't listen. He let science get in the way of your family right up until he died, and now here you are."
I go to say something but Matt speaks up. "I like to think I would do the same thing."
"Quite." Phillip straightens his tie. "Did he say anything before he went through?"
"Like what?" Matt asks.
"Oh, I don't know, let's start with unusual."
Danny's words echo in my mind. Phillip Burton is connected to Helen. That would explain how he knows all about my family life, because I made sure with Lester and the Minister that Helen's, mine and Dad's files weren't accessible to anyone but them. Burton is not to be trusted.
"He was pretty focused on Patrick," is all I say.
"Well, I suppose that's understandable. Let's hope he turns up again one day."
"Yeah." I mutter.
Phillip walks away and once out of earshot, I turn to Matt. "I hate him," I mutter.
"I know, but you can't let your feelings get in the way here. I know you trust Danny but we don't have proof that what he said was true."
"We do."
"How?"
"Everything Burton just said about my family...no one would know that unless he looked through our files."
Matt's face lights up in realisation. "And yours and your parents' aren't accessible to anyone but Lester and the Minister."
My face pricks up. "So you've tried?"
"As team leader I like to know who I'm working with, but I know very little about you."
"Well, I'm 23 and I've been doing this since I was 18. Both my parents are dead, I've nearly died on this job countless of times and currently, I'm just trying to do my job which is hard to do when people keep questioning me."
"I don't mean to Lizzie, but you're my second in command, and like I said, I want to know who I'm working with."
"Look Matt, all you need to know is that my mind is in the present. Everything in the past is done, and I don't want to discuss that part of me anymore."
"You won't be able to keep your mind in the present forever Lizzie, but I'll do my best to help you, okay?"
I smile. "Thank you."
The alarm sounds and I run off ahead of Matt towards Jess.
"Where's the anomaly?" I ask, heading in.
"There isn't one, but Lester says a man's gone missing - thinks he's been snatched by some sort of creature."
"We'll head down and check it out," I say. "Send us the coordinates."
When we arrive on scene, there's a massive hole in the road. Doesn't seem like an incursion to me yet...just building works.
"Where's Connor?" Becker asks, looking around and noticing his absence.
