I'm sat at my desk when Matt walks in but I don't bother to look up. Instead, I continue staring at my laptop screen, scrolling through images of Dad, Stephen and I before all of this anomaly stuff started...when we were happy. Then it moves onto pictures of Becker and I and I take a deep breath.
Matt sits down next to me with a laptop, the hard drive plugged in.
"Connor's work is encrypted," he tells me. "I'm nearly there."
I close the picture files down and slam my laptop shut. "Please don't tell me I broke into Connor's lab for nothing."
Matt doesn't speak for a moment but when he does, he gets all of my attention. "Okay, I'm in."
We scroll through the work and my face screws up in confusion.
"Anomaly readings?" Matt mutters.
"What are you trying to achieve Connor?" I whisper to myself.
The alarms start blaring and I put my coms in as Matt speaks.
"What is it, Jess?"
"You're not going to believe where this anomaly is."
Matt gives me a look. "Try me."
So, what a surprise. It's Connor's lab. I guess this answers my question.
"Connor, open up! It's a direct order," Matt shouts as we reach his door.
"What have you done?" Abby asks as we walk in, eyeing the mini anomaly on his desk.
"What have I-? How about congratulations, no? This is the first man made anomaly in history and I made that."
My fists are clenched at my side. "Lock it," I seethe, ignoring the look from Becker when Matt places a hand on my shoulder to try and calm me. Matt's just looking out for me, and not pushing me to be someone I'm not and change in a way I can't.
"I suggest you turn around and leave this lab immediately," says Philip as he walks in. "Because under no circumstances is anyone going to lock this anomaly."
"Oh jog on," I mutter.
"Philip, we have to do our job," Matt says, pushing the attention away from my snarky comment.
"Matt, if we lock this anomaly now, the readings just get weaker. We might lose it altogether," Connor tries to defend Philip.
"Oh, and that would be bad? Why?" Abby asks. She looks crushed.
"Abby, come on."
"When were you going to tell me?" Her voice cracks. "When were you going to stop lying?"
"It was classified Abby! I wanted to tell you, but I couldn't! Look, it's perfectly safe. Look at the size of it. You couldn't even get a T-Rex's toe through there. I know what I'm doing."
I shake my head. Connor is absolutely unbelievable. "No, you don't. You really, really don't. You're messing with things you don't understand," I try to tell him.
"But I do understand Lizzie, and I thought out of everyone else here you would too. This is what Cutter worked for...for so long. This is what he hoped one day he'd complete with you."
There are tears falling freely now and I can't stop them. They're from a whole mix of emotions but right now the overpowering one is anger. "No Connor." My voice is sharp. "This isn't a continuation of Dad's work. He just wanted to understand them, not create them."
"But this is the way to understand them."
"No Connor! This is the way to destroy us all! Dad would have never put people in danger for the sake of research."
