Let's learn how to read Hanguel by romanizing them into English Alphabet!

자음 [Consonants]

ㄱ = g
ㄴ = n
ㄷ = d
ㄹ = l / r
ㅁ = m
ㅂ = b
ㅅ = s
ㅇ = no sound (when used as a first consonant / used as "ng" as final consonant)
ㅈ = j
ㅊ = ch
ㅋ = k
ㅌ = t
ㅍ = p
ㅎ = h

모음 [vowels]

ㅏ = a
ㅑ = ya
ㅓ = eo
ㅕ = yeo
ㅗ = o
ㅛ = yo
ㅜ = u
ㅠ = yu
ㅡ = eu
ㅣ = i

쌍 자음 [Double Consonants]

ㄲ = kk (gg)
ㄸ = tt (dd)
ㅃ = pp (bb)
ㅆ = ss
ㅉ = jj

[you can ask at the comment box if you have questions on this part!]

쌍 모음 [double vowels]

ㅐ= ae [like eh not ey]
ㅒ= yae
ㅔ= e
ㅖ = ye
ㅘ = wa
ㅙ = wae (like weh as in 왜)
ㅚ = wi
ㅝ = woe (wo)
ㅞ = we
ㅟ = wi
ㅢ = ui

there are two 쌍 모음 that is rarely used which are ㅒ and 웨 but good to know.

Now let's form a character. But first, how to form a character?

This is my only tip for you guys, When i was learning how to write korean, I didn't know how to form a character, I actually can't remember how I learned. Anyway, This is my tip, USE KEYBOARD as your learning tool. If your phone's keyboard has a Korean language, add that. Keep on typing anything even if you don't know any korean words. If you'd noticed this when typing:

ㄹㄷ밤 ㅏㅁ ㅎㅍㅁ

that's wrong. and if you see this:

퍼나마미밈오노워마매뮤 (no meaning)

this is the right way.

AND ALSO, read korean news (even on social media), posts or anything that is written in korean, i assure you, that will help you.

*** BACK TO FORMING A CHARACTER ***

In forming a character, we have to start with consonant first and then go with vowel. This method is Initial Consonant + Vowel

example:

ㅂ+ㅔ= 베 (be)
ㅈ+ㅓ= 저 (jeo)
ㄴ+ ㅠ = 뉴 (nyu)

In another method which is Initial Consonant + Vowel + Final Consonant

examples:

ㅁ + ㅗ + ㄱ = 목 (mok)
ㅈ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 잔 (jan)
ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅂ = 밥 (bab)
ㅁ + ㅐ + ㅇ = 맹 (maeng)

[again, if you still can't understand, ask me.]

So what if the final consonant is a double consonant, how do we read that?

examples:

ㄷ + ㅏ + ㄲ = 닦 (dakk)
ㄲ becomes kk when pronounced.

ㅇ + ㅏ + ㅆ = 았 (att)
ㅆ becomes tt when pronounced.
but there is a exemption, when the final consonant ㅆ is followed by a vowel, it becomes ss.

었어요 it's not otteoyo but eosseoyo.

And if you have to write something that you think you're pronouncing a vowel like yedam (ygtb yo!) you have to write ㅇ first because as i've said earlier ㅇ has no sound when used as initial/first consonant but if you use it as final consonant it sounds and pronounced as ng (nang).

examples:
예담 /ye-dam/
얼쑤 /eol-ssu/
언니 /eonnie/

Before I end this, these are the free korean words that you can learn in this chapter:
