Epilogue

Seven Years Later

Lillian Bates was sewing a tapestry in her home, while her son, John, was doing his homework. Lillian’s daughter, Lucinda, was reading her etiquette book.

“Mother, why do I need to know this? It isn’t fun,” Lucinda complained.

Sighing, Lillian put her tapestry down and took her six year old daughter and set her on her lap. “I didn’t want to learn this when I was your age either, Lucinda. My grandmother made me sit, do my tapestry, and listen to every word when I would have much rather played outside with your father.”

“It is very boring, and I want to play with Jillian,” Lucinda exclaimed, referring to her baby sister.

“Alright, if you ask Daddy if he will allow you to stop etiquette lessons, I won’t make you learn them anymore.”

Excited, Lucinda jumper off of her mother’s lap and ran out to ask her father, William. She returned quickly with a big smile on her face.

“He said that I don’t have to do them anymore!”

“Alright, then you are excused from your etiquette lessons from now on. But there is one thing I want you to remember.”

“What is it?”

“A lady never tells.”
