as the sky fades
into an inky blackness,
do you ever fear
that you'll fade too?

or as the stars fall
from the moon's grasp,
do you ever worry
that you'll fall with them?

and when the light dies
from the sun's eyes,
do you understand
that you'll die too?

ghost-like clouds
haunt the darkness,
clinging
to the corpse
of a long-lost existence.

an icy breeze
swirls through the air,
clawing
at the tendrils
of a far-fetched reality.

sprawling trees
whisper tales of times forgotten,
moaning
from its soul
with half-hearted envy.

goosebumps
skitter
across the planes
of my skin—
a map
of where
the cold lingers
amongst my ribs.

this cold
refuses
to leave,
claiming
my weary body
as its home.

tell me,
are your insides
as frozen
and as fractured
as mine?

does the wind
stream past your ears
and howl
like a misguided wolf?

perhaps
you hear the cries
of lonely dogs,
chained
and cold
and lost.

we may not be alone,
but it doesn't change
that there is no
warmth here
anymore.

there may never be
again.
