I've heard echoes,
the kind that make
the world tremble.
we often forget that
the world is human, too.

it bends and it breaks
like a glacier
in the midst of a sea of ice.
I've heard it
in the silence that follows.
I've heard it
in the quaking and the clawing,
the cries of desperation.
but it's only ever an echo.
never a true sound.
the world is human, too.

we mourn fools
and yet fools destroy us.
fools inhabit this world.
fools smother the echos
we need to hear in order to survive.
not just survive.
thrive.
and the world fights back,
with teeth sharp enough to slice your soul.
the world is human, too,
therefore the wounds are more than superficial.

the echoes are fading.
I've heard it in my daydreams.
there is no darkness there, no pain.
this world is full of pain.
our bodies house agony
like it's a welcome guest.
we never flinch
as the ice spreads.
we never withdraw
as it serenades our most vital organs
to sleep.

we blame the creator of this world
for our pain.
we blame the world for being weak.

but the world is human, too.
