I Am Not A Merman (XI)

Shang Ke noticed that the growth rate of the mermens was very slow. Two months old infants would have grown at least twice their initial size, but the two mermens were not much different from their birth size. The only change was their tail, the pink and translucent quality of the tail has disappeared, replaced by a pale ashy blue. They could swim in shallow water for dozens of minutes, but once they enter the deeper areas, they would sink to no avail and could not swim up no matter how hard they tried.

Besides the outsider breeder Shang Ke, there were three researchers in charge of taking care of them. Because the mermens were still too young, they mainly did common examinations and observations without doing any live experimenting.

Shang Ke was in favor of their attitude, he hoped that before they could independently decide things for themselves, that others will not so lightly decide theirs for them.

Shang Ke stood in the water, holding the little merman and carefully feeding him. The little merman lied in his palm, his tail swishing from side to side as his eyes glanced around at his surroundings in curiosity.

The other little merman that had already had his fill was lying in the shallow water, staring unblinkingly at Shang Ke and his little brother.

The two little guys were each named "Yu Miao" and "Yu Ge", chosen by Shang Ke and Qin Yuan. But the others did not care about these names, they just call them by their number.

After coaxing the two to sleep, Shang Ke tidied things up and left.

He happened to meet the research institute leader when he was leaving the laboratory so Shang Ke smiled and greeted him. But the other only coldly nodded.

Shang Ke did not really like this leader, not because he and Qin Yuan did not get along, but it was because of the way he ignores animal life. If it wasn't Qin Yuan in control, his way of researching right now wouldn't be so gentle.

However, Shang Ke has still underestimated this man's coldness.

The next day, when Shang Ke arrived at the laboratory on time, he discovered that one of the mermans were gone. Following the researcher's enthusiastic discussion, Shang Ke went to another tank and found Yu Miao.

Shang Ke simply could not believe his eyes when he first saw him. The little merman's appearance had underwent a huge change. His face was greatly twisted and deformed, a light blue carapace was growing out of his back while his small hands turned into pincer-shaped. His tail was also split into two, resembling... a lobster!

"What is going on?!" Shang Ke furiously glared at the others.

A researcher replied, "Leader used the little merman and a lobster to do a frequency resonance test. The result is as you see."

The eyes they all used to look at the little merman was full of amazement along with rejection and fear toward the unknown.

Frequency resonance test! The little mermens have the genes of dolphins, in other words, they have a sure probability of obtaining the dolphin's assimilation capability and turn into other organisms. But they are still so young so they are unlikely to change by themselves.

However, the research leader's experiment induced him to change earlier.

The little merman in the water tank sensed Shang Ke's scent and gradually unfolded his curled body. With his back stopped, he swam toward Shang Ke, crying softly. Humans would not be able to hear it, but Shang Ke could hear it clearly.

He was in pain and wants comfort from someone familiar.

For such a cute little merman to turn into such an ugly and deformed appearance, it really pained his heart.
