Chapter Eleven | The Carnival

Ember's POV:

The soft sound of chirping birds filled my ears as I drifted into reality. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and stretched as I yawned. Deep down I was a little disappointed that my dream about Johnny didn't last longer. I dreamed that he and I were cuddling on the couch in his apartment like we had the last time. 'I really hope he and I get to do that again. Being in his arms felt so perfect and cozy.' I thought inside of my head. After a couple of minutes of just laying in bed I eventually got up. I put on one of my vintage looking Halloween t-shirts on along with a pair of ripped blue jeans. Once I had my clothes on, I slipped on my orange colored converse. When I walked downstairs I found my dad cooking breakfast. He was flipping pancakes while Onyx was sitting at the table looking at his phone. "Good morning." I said with a small smile as I got myself a cup of hot coffee. "Morning. How did you sleep?" My dad said as I took a seat at the table. "Good." I replied. Onyx and I talked about the carnival as we waited on my dad to finish cooking breakfast for all of us. "You mean they have a haunted house and stuff too?" He asked me curiously with a small smile. "Yeah, they have a haunted house. They have a bunch of stuff! It's the best carnival in the state." My dad said as he moved a large plate of pancakes to the table. We filled our plates and put whatever we wanted on them. I grabbed the whipped cream and fruit. After we finished eating Onyx and I helped my dad wash the dishes. Eventually my dad went to his building to carve and paint ducks. Since we were alone I told Onyx about Johnny finding my sketchbook and everything. "Thank god he found it! What did he say when he saw the drawings of him inside?" He asked me curiously. I told him how Johnny had reacted, and how I felt like my heart was gonna explode. Deep down I thought he was gonna kick me out of his classes or chose not to be my friend anymore, but he likes my drawings of him. "I think he likes you, Ember. I mean really likes you. If he didn't then he wouldn't have been so sweet and kind about it. Any other professor would have cut all ties with you, but he decided to take you to the carnival instead." Onyx said with a small smile on his face. "I don't know. I mean... he's probably just being a sweet friend." I replied, shrugging my shoulders. He shook his head as he smiled. "You're too naive. Mr. Depp is so into you." He said, but I still didn't believe him. Why would someone so handsome and perfect be romantically interested in me? I pressed my thoughts to the back of my mind and suggested decorating the house for Halloween. I told my dad what we were going to do, and he offered to help. All three of us ended up getting the house ready for Halloween, which was so much fun. My dad hung up the orange, purple, and green lights. Onyx and I decked the place out with fake skeletons, cobwebs, etc. When we finished my dad made us some iced tea to go with some sandwiches. "How have your classes been going?" My dad asked us curiously, breaking the comfortable silence. "They're going good." I replied. "Yeah, but I just wish they'd lay back on the homework a little." Onyx said, which made my dad chuckle. "How has Mr. Depp been? He seems like a really nice guy, I'm sure he isn't killing you with homework." My dad said. It made me so happy to hear my dad say that about Johnny. 'Maybe I can have Johnny in my life with my dad knowing after all.' I thought inside of my head. I told him that Mr. Depp was actually gonna cut back on the homework leading up to Halloween. "I wish my professors were like that." Onyx said. Around two o'clock we left to go to the carnival. My dad came with us as well. We ate cotton candy, funnel cake, corn dogs, and everything else filled with sugar and deep fried. No one ever said that carnivals are healthy, but that's something I kinda liked. 'I'll have to eat salad for a month now if I end up eating like this tomorrow too.' I thought inside of my head. There were a few little veneers there and we looked around at them. Onyx got a couple cool looking skull rings. I bought a new bracelet even though my arms are covered with jewelry as it is. When night drew nearer and nearer more people started coming and we quickly got into the haunted house line. It was full of jump scares and it looked absolutely awesome inside. It was like an old vampire's mansion. After that we walked into the big top where a usual circus/freak show act took place. There were sword swallowers, fire breathers, fire jugglers, tight rope walkers, a bearded lady, etc. "This place is amazing!" Onyx said with a look of amazement on his face. "We told you they have pretty much everything here. The local fair is nothing compared to this." My dad said. Once the show was over everyone was lead out of the circus tent and out into the rest of the carnival. Rides and games were still in full swing. I knew this place wouldn't calm down until at least one or two in the morning. "Wow." Onyx said as two people on stilts walked past us. "Just wait until it gets closer to Halloween. Almost everyone walks around wearing costumes. This place was meant for people like us." I said with a smile, and Onyx agreed. Before leaving we played a few carnival games. He won a Jack Skelington funko pop figure, and I won a Foxy plushie from Five Nights At Freddy's. I was happy, especially since FNAF is one of my favorite video games; I love watching Markiplier and Dawko play it. When we got back home it was already eleven o'clock. Instead of going to bed we stayed up and talked about what we just experienced. All of us still had a lot of energy, which was kinda odd. Usually I feel so tired after going to something like that. I guess being with people you love helps you keep your spirits up. At midnight we said our good nights to each other and got ready for bed. When I got into my room I changed into my pajamas and climbed into bed. 'I can't wait to see Johnny tomorrow. Hopefully he and I will be able to ride some rides at the carnival.' I thought inside of my head as I drifted off to sleep. The morning came quickly, but I didn't get out of bed until eleven o'clock. Being out late made me more tired than I previously thought. Apparently that went the same with Onyx and my dad, because neither one of them were up yet. I had half the mind to draw a mustache on Onyx while he was sleeping, but I decided against it. I didn't want him having to go back to his dorm and get made fun of by his roommate. So instead I started cooking breakfast for all of us. 'I wonder if Onyx was gonna spend the night again, or go back to campus.' I thought inside of my head as I put some bacon in a skillet. "Good morning." My dad's voice said in a whisper as he walked into the kitchen. "Morning." I replied with a small smile. He started brewing a pot of coffee as Onyx came into the room. We talked about the carnival some more as we ate together. My dad went into town to buy groceries while we watched movies. Before I knew it, it was time for me to meet up with Johnny at the end of our driveway. "You be careful." My dad said as I put my jacket on. "I will, I promise." I said. "If anything goes wrong just call or text me." Onyx said. Both of them looked a little worried, and I didn't blame them. The carnival can be a dangerous place when bad people are there. But I had fait in Johnny's ability to protect me. They gave me hugs as we said our goodbyes. I walked down the driveway with a little bounce in my step. I couldn't wait to be in Johnny's arms. When I made it to the end of the driveway I spotted his car, but I made sure it was him before getting inside. "Hey sweetheart. Come here." He said, making my insides melt. We gave each other a small hug before I buckled up. As I took in his appearance I noticed how unbelievably handsome he looked in his plain white buttoned shirt. He was wearing a pair of black pants as well along with a black overcoat. He looked so good it hurt. "Are you ready?" He asked me curiously and I nodded. "Good." He replied as he pulled out of the driveway. The radio was playing Don't Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, which is a perfect song to listen to during the fall. It might something to do with the fact it's in the original Halloween movie. I pressed my thoughts to the back of my mind as I watched the trees pass by in a blur of colors. Today felt so magical for some reason, but I figured it was because I'm with Johnny. He and I haven't been able to spend quality time together recently, so this would be nice for both of us. "How is your weekend going so far?" Johnny asked, breaking the comfortable silence. "It has been going pretty good. Yesterday Onyx, my dad, and I went to the carnival together." I replied. "Awww. I wanted to be the first person to go to the carnival with you." He said with an adorable fake pout. "It's okay, we didn't go on any rides. We just played some games and watched one of the shows." I replied. "I was just kidding. But I'm gonna make sure your experience with me is gonna be way more fun." He said in a tone of voice that made my blush. My insides squirmed as well. Especially from the dark, yet sparkling look in his eyes. 'Ugh! What are you doing to be Johnny?!?!?!' I thought inside of my head. When we got to our destination he parked the car and we headed into the grounds. People were running around in costumes and stuff. It seemed even more alive today than it did yesterday. We grabbed something to eat and just talked for a while before we played some carnival games. After we looked at the vendors he lead me to where the rides were. We got on a couple of them, which was nice. "Come on, let's get on the ferris wheel." He said as he gently took my hand and lead me towards the Ferris wheel. His touch felt electric; it made my head skip a few beats. The way his had fit perfectly in mine gave me butterflies. The warmth of his large hand made my insides melt as well. 'My heart!' I thought inside of my head. We got in line and it didn't take long for us to get a seat on the ferris wheel. There was a little space between us and I had to restrain myself from snuggling closer to him. His heavenly scent was so intoxicating. Not to mention the fact that I was terrified that I was going to be up in the air. "You can come a little closer to me." He said, and we both moved a little closer to each other. His body felt so warm against mine. The ferris wheel started moving just as the sun was starting to set. "Wow. Everything looks so beautiful from up here." I said as we reached the top of the wheel. To my surprise the ride stopped, and we were sitting up there for a few minutes. Even though it was a little scary, I wasn't too worried. The view was absolutely beautiful and I had the most handsomest man in the world sitting next to me. I could hear the music and the sound of people laughing below. It was like not a single problem in the world existed here. "It is beautiful. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to share this breathtaking sunset with such a sweet girl like you." He said before he left a gentle kiss on my forehead. My heart and insides melted at his sweet gesture. When he pulled away slightly I got lost in his beautiful big brown eyes. The blood orang sunset made him look as if he was glowing. Everything about him looked so handsome and perfect. "I... I love you." I blurted out without even thinking. Anxiety filled my stomach and my heart started beating wildly in my chest. My face burned with embarrassment and I'm sure I probably looked like a tomato. "You... you love me?" He asked as he tilted his head to the side slightly. "Like... really love me?" He said after a couple seconds of silence. His eyes softened with a morning dew sort of glow to them. "I... yes. I love you. I've loved you since the day I met you, but I was too afraid to tell you. I didn't wanna scare you off... I didn't wanna ruin our friendship." I said as I rubbed my arm awkwardly. "I just... I know it's stupid, because I know I can't be with you. But... I can't stop the way you make me feel." I felt butterflies flutter in my stomach as he gently placed his large hand against my cheek. His touch made my heart skip a few beats just like before. "Sweetheart, I love you too. I never thought a beautiful young girl like you would ever feel the same way about an old man like me. I mean... I half expected you to end up with some... I don't know.... some buff looking due that could beat me up." He said with a small little laugh. "Buff guys aren't my type, Johnny. You are." I said and an attractive little smile spread across his handsome face. He stroked my cheek with his thumb as his eyes kept shifting from my eyes to my lips and back again. My heart beat quickened as I as I started doing the same thing to him. My heart and soul were begging for a kiss from him. He tilted his head slightly as he slowly moved closer to me. 'Oh my god! This is it! He's gonna kiss me!!' I thought inside of my head. I attempted to calm myself down, but it wasn't working out to well. How can you calm down when you're about to have your first kiss ever from the person you're in love with? He gently nuzzled his nose against mine before we closed the distance between us. When our lips met it felt like a bucket of warm weather had been dumped on top of me. My entire body filled with warmth, a warmth that went all the way down to my bones. His lips felt so feathery soft and perfect against mine; they felt way softer than I ever imagined they would be. I placed my hands on his chest as I gently kissed him back. Deep down I hoped I was doing this right, because I didn't want him to think I was a bad kisser. Especially since he was so good at it. We slowly broke the kiss and I could feel his warm breath against my skin. I'm sure he felt my breath on his skin as well. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that." He said with a dreamy look in his beautiful chocolate brown eyes. I couldn't help but giggled and blush. We snuggled into each other's sides and enjoyed the rest of the ferris wheel ride. After we were safely back on the ground, we went to his car. Both of us were over the carnival at this point. All we wanted to do was kiss and cuddle. I messaged my dad and let him know I was staying at Johnny's, which resulted in a text spam from Onyx. But I opted to ignore that for the time being. Johnny left the parking lot and headed towards he is apartment building. The entire time we listened to music and held hands until we got to our destination. Once we reached his apartment we got on the couch to cuddle. Eventually out cuddle session turned into a tickle war. He had me pinned to the couch with his body hovering over mine. "I love you." I said like a love struck teenager. "I love you too, sweetheart." He said before capturing my lips with his. I kissed him back and reached up to tangle my fingers in his hair. Those graying locks of his felt so soft to the touch. We kissed so much my lips were a little swollen and so was his. "You know, if I find anyone flirting with you at college I'll make their life a living hell." He said as he st up and pulled me into his lap. My legs were wrapped around him and my butt was sitting on his crossed legs. Even though I had a little boost for height I was still shorter than him. "Johnny, my heart belongs to you. No one is gonna steal me from you." I said. "I know, but you're my girl now. I gotta keep you safe and let others know your taken." He said as he attacked my neck with soft kisses. He hit my sweet spot and I had to bite my bottom lip to prevent myself from moaning or whimpering. 'This man is gonna be the death of me.' I thought inside of my head. He stopped his gentle attack on my neck and we cuddled a little longer before heading to bed. He let me borrow some of his pajamas, which I changed into before climbing into bed. "I love you so much, Johnny." I said. "I love you too sweetheart." He said before I drifted off to sleep. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
