Terry Fox

This is a poem I wrote in 1984 or 1985. I was in grade 9 at the time.

There was a man named Terry Fox,

strong and stubborn like an ox.

he wanted to raise money for cancer,

knowing someday there was an answer.

All his friends would laugh and boast,

he could run from coast to coast.

Although Terry was an amputee,

he could outrun you or me.

He wanted to save others from the pain,

in his heart, he knew it was a lot to gain.

Terry Fox knew at least someday,

the pain he suffered would finally pay.

"Run Terry run," the radio would blare,

it let him know that people did care.

26 miles was a steady beat,

he hobbled and ran in cold and heat.

Terry's t-shirt was drenched in sweat,

on certain days he'd whine and fret.

As the people's pressure was too thick,

he ran until he was extremely sick.

He promised he'd go all the way,

he stopped his journey at Thunder Bay.

They took him home, for he was ill,

determination to finish was in him still.

Terry is a hero in Canada's eyes,

unlike others, he always tries.

So if you find days hard to cope,

think of Terry's Marathon of Hope!
