Chapter 13: The Prince's Hatred

~Nolan~

The time came to get started on the weeklong training activity where we had to find the ribbon that was hidden somewhere in the kingdom and try to keep it safe until next Friday's class. To be honest, I wasn't confident in my team at all.

Well, I did have confident in Jack and Amethyst. I definitely didn't have any faith in Jerome. I didn't even know why he was on my team. There was no way he was going to be an asset.

"I hope you're all ready for the start of the heist," Raymond said once we were all in the training yard. "And because today is the start, there won't be a class today once I give you everything you need to get started."

"Is there any chance I can switch teams?" Jerome asked. "I would rather not be with him." He glared at me and I just glared at him back. How mature.

Raymond sighed. "I don't know what's going on between you and your teammate but switching teams is not permitted right now. There aren't any open spots so you're just going to have to figure things out."

       "Great," Jerome muttered.

"Anyway," Raymond said. "I'm about to hand out the maps and the riddles. Do not look at them until we go over all the rules. If any of you defy the rules, your entire team will be disqualified from the heist." Raymond started handing out the maps and riddles. "If you find the ribbon, it must be hidden within the zone marked on the map. You're not allowed to purposefully harm someone. You may enlist in someone's help outside of training school to assist you in finding and stealing the ribbon, but not to guard it."

"So, theoretically, is the castle on or off limits?" Ryder asked. "Not that my team is planning on hiding the ribbon there when we find it. I'm just curious."

"You'll find that out once you look at the map," Raymond said. "Which you're able to do right now. Good luck, everyone. I look forward to seeing which team comes out on top."

Since we got the 'go ahead' to look at the map and the riddle, I opened the envelope that contained the riddle. I didn't even take two seconds before Jerome huffed. "Can't you go any faster?" he asked.

"Oh, shut up," I said. "I'm opening it as fast as I could."

"Clearly you're not fast enough if the other teams are already looking at the riddle," Jerome said before taking the envelope out of my hand. "I'll do it."

I took it back from him. "No, I'll do it."

Amethyst took it from me. "I'll do it. Seriously, what's up with you two? I thought you two were best friends or something."

I snorted. "Me? Best friends with him? That's rich. I will never be best friends with someone like him."

       Jerome glared at me. "Likewise."

Jack sighed heavily, looking clearly irritated. "Just open that stupid envelope, Amethyst. Seriously, you're going to be the one slowing down the team."

       "Excuse me?" Amethyst asked.

Jack didn't reply. He just took the envelope from Amethyst's hands and opened it, taking out the small card with the riddle on it. His eyebrows furrowed as he read it.

"Well?" Jerome asked. "What does it say?"

"The heart of the stone," Jack said.
