Chapter 15: The Baker's Confusion
~Grant~
Something was wrong. Very wrong. I didn't think I had seen this much chaos in the kingdom before. All I was doing was getting a few things from my family's garden to bring back to the bakery and almost everywhere I went, people were arguing quite loudly with each other, as if they couldn't stand each other.
But I could have sworn that some of these people who were arguing were friends, or at the very most a couple. So why was there such a sudden change in people's behaviours and relationships?
I was hoping whatever was going on wouldn't affect me at all but I should have known better than to hope for something as big as that if it was affecting the whole kingdom. While I was walking back to the bakery, I saw Ollie walking by so I said hi to him.
And he ignored.
Not a 'hi' back. Not a smile. He didn't even so much as looked in my direction.
"Ollie?" I asked. "I said hi."
"I know," he said in a somewhat harsh tone as he continued walking to wherever he was heading.
"Okay, so you couldn't say hi back?" I asked slowly.
Ollie snorted. "Yeah, right. Why would I say hi to you?"
I furrowed my eyebrows. What as up with him? He was one of the sweetest people I know, and he was always trying to be as polite as he could so he could try showing everyone that sorcerers and other people who were different weren't anything to be afraid of.
Not only that but he was my friend. He never talked to me like this before. Even when I annoyed the hell out of him, he tried his best to look irritated but he never truly was. I could tell he was always trying to fight a smile.
And now, it was almost as if he... he hated me.
For no reason.
I was really hoping he was just playing a trick on me or something, trying to get me back for all the times I annoyed him so I said, "You always say hi to me when you see me. You're my friend."
"Friend?" Ollie repeated. "You and I are not friends. We'll never be friends." And just like that, he walked off.
I wanted to follow him to try to figure out what was wrong but I also figured it might have to do with all the other people who were arguing with each other right now. And right now, it might be best to just leave him alone, even though it was extremely painful not to talk to him right now.
I sighed heavily and continued my way to the bakery to drop off the ingredients from the gardens. Dad was working at the counter and Cora was in the kitchen and normally, we only needed one person at the counter so I guessed I was going to have to work with Cora in the kitchen.
Great.
"I brought the ingredients," I said to Cora, setting them on the counter.
"Put them in the fridge if they belong in there," she demanded.
"Please," I said.
Cora raised an eyebrow. "Why are you saying please?"
"I'm hinting at you to say please to your stepson," I said. "Or at least ask for me to put these in the fridge."
"Do it, Grant," Cora said.
I rolled my eyes before walking to the front of the bakery. "Dad, I'm refusing to work in the kitchen with Cora. She still doesn't know how to use this wonderful thing called manners."
