Melinda expected to walk into her first period class and stand awkwardly at the front of the room as everyone reluctantly said hello to her. This wasn't the first time she's been a new student, and was getting quite bored of it. Her life revolved around meeting new people and letting her loved ones go.

The only difference about today was there wasn't any sort of forced greeting. Melinda walked into her first period Spanish class holding a piece of paper that had her timetable on it.

"Hi, I'm Melinda." The redhead mumbled as she walked over to where a woman was sitting.

"Ahh, hola. Take any empty seat." The teacher replied, briefly glancing at Melinda's timetable just to make sure she was in the right class.

"Thanks, uh-." Melinda looked down at the page to try and figure out the woman's name.

"Mrs. Goff." She stated, making a hand motion that was meant to shoo Melinda away. The girl nodded before looking out at the classroom. There was about twenty students in the room, and they all seemed to be minding their own business. Melinda spotted a seat close to the back of the room and made her way over, feeling people look up at her with their now curious eyes as she walked by.

Melinda's second class of the day was Trigonometry, and that went about as normal as any new kid's first day. She was given many worksheets in Mr. Varner's attempt to catch her up to speed, and sat beside a friendly girl who seemed to never stop fiddling with her pencil.

The third class of the day was English. Melinda walked in the room, and almost immediately felt dozens of tiny goosebumps rise up on her arms. Mr. Mason was the first teacher that made the class say hello to their new student, so Melinda took this opportunity to look around at her classmates. She recognized a handful of them from her other classes, but didn't know their names.

One boy in particular stood out to Melinda. He didn't raise his head to greet his new classmate, but instead kept his eyes focused on the desk. He had golden blonde hair and skin that looked like it hadn't seen sunlight in a year. The navy blue jacket he was wearing was zipped all the way up, his chin tucked just inside the fabric.

"Why don't you go sit next to Edward? That's the only seat left." Mr. Mason told Melinda, using his hand to gesture over to the boy that was similar to a statue. The only part of him that moved was his thumb, as it tapped the wooden surface in front of him.

"Sure." Melinda replied, quickly glancing over her shoulder at the teacher before walking towards the empty seat. As soon she sat down, the boy named Edward perked his head up. Melinda stood frozen as they caught each other's eyes. His were warm pools of amber, with hues of fatigue underneath.

"Hello, I'm Edward." The boy stated, a small smile forming on his lips as he looked at the girl who just sat down beside him.

Melinda set her bag down on the tiled floor beside her desk before introducing herself. "Melinda. Nice to meet you." She replied, holding out a hand. Edward glanced down at her hand before shaking it with his own.

All of a sudden, Melinda's skin was shocked by the sudden coldness. She assumed the room was just cold because of the temperature when she walked in, but Edward's hand was colder than ice. The feeling quickly subsided, just as the boy pulled his hand away. His smile faded, while his attention turned to the front of the room.

Melinda looked down at her open palm, before squeezing it shut then relaxing it in her lap. There was a tingling sensation in her fingers, but it wasn't from the frigid temperature. Warmth began to spread throughout the girl's body, like she was being encased in an invisible blanket. When Mr. Mason began his lesson, Melinda tried to push the feeling away from her, and didn't cast a single glance in Edward's direction for the rest of class.

It was almost as if someone had flipped a mood switch in Edward. As soon as the bell rang, he darted out the classroom door without saying a word. As Melinda left the room and started walking to her fourth period Biology class, she couldn't help but replay the event of meeting Edward in her mind. It was, so far, the strangest thing that had happened to her today.

After Biology came lunch. As Melinda walked through the cafeteria, trying to find a place to sit, she couldn't help but notice Edward sitting at a round table by the windows with four other people. They all had the same smooth, pale skin as him, but vastly different hairstyles. One of the girls had dark brown hair that was cut into a pixie style, while the other girl had long blonde hair that draped over her shoulders and had a clip on one side, above her ear. The boys were total opposites of each other. One had short black hair, and looked to be made entirely of muscle, while the second boy had messy honey coloured hair and a thin frame. He stared off in the distance while his table mates were deep in conversation.

"Hey, we love new meat! Come over here, what's your name?" Melinda's admiring session was interrupted by someone calling out for her at a different table. "Yeah, you. Come 'ere." The dark haired boy clarified, noticing that Melinda looked confused. He waved her over until she was standing right beside the table. There was three other people sitting with him.

"Hey, new girl." A boy with sandy blonde hair grinned with thin lips as he stood up from his seat, and gestured for Melinda to sit down.

"Hi, I'm...I'm Melinda." The redhead awkwardly raised her hand to wave. She smiled at the people she was sitting with, flinching slightly as the blonde boy jumped up on a chair and crouched down.

"I'm Eric, this is Jessica, Angela, and, uh, that's Mike. Ignore him." The boy that called Melinda over introduced everyone. The blonde, Mike, reached forwards to slap Eric on the shoulder at his comment.

"Hi, we don't get new students alot. Kinda weird." The brunette who Melinda assumed to be Jessica spoke, laughing nervously as she did.

"It's not weird, it's just uncommon." Angela butted in. She wore light pink almond shaped glasses. Melinda listened to everyone as they spoke, easily being able to remember all of their names.

"So, where are you from?" Mike asked, jumping off the table and pulling up a chair.

"Can you sit still?" Eric asked him as Angela rolled her eyes.

"I just moved here from a small town outside of Chicago." Melinda replied, a small smile on her lips as she spoke to Mike. So far, she was enjoying how friendly people in Forks were.

"So you're not a city girl?" Eric asked, pulling a face that implied he was impressed. Melinda shook her head, noticing that Jessica looked bored as she picked at her nails, and Angela occasionally looked up from her work to listen to bits of the conversation.

The table fell silent for a moment, and Melinda couldn't help her gaze as it wandered over to where the Cullen family sat. None of them had touched their food, they were all just talking to each other or looking around the cafeteria. Melinda quickly looked away as Edward glanced over, not having the chance to notice the small smile that formed across his lips.
