Allah (ﷻ) mentioned in the Quran:
"Have you never thought of men who went out of their homes as a measure of safety against death, and they were thousands, to whom Allah said: "Die," then restored them to life? Indeed Allah bestows His blessings on men; only most men are not grateful." (2:243)
.
Muhammed ibn Ishaq has reported that Wahb ibn Munabbih said: When Kalib ibn Yoofana died after Yoosha, Hazqeel ibn Boodhi succeeded him as a Prophet of the children of Israel.
.
Ibn Ishaq said: The Israelites fled from their houses, fearing the plague, and settled down in the plateau.
Allah (ﷻ) told them: Die.
They all died. Then, a fence was erected to protect them from wild animals.
.
A few centuries later, Hazqeel (as) passed by. He stopped at the site of them and started reflecting.
It was said to him: Would you like Allah to resurrect them as you watch?
He said: yes
He was ordered to call out to the bones to come back to life and the flesh to cover them, muscle by muscle.
He called them accordingly, and all the people stood up and said "Allah is the greatest" in one voice.
.
According to a number of Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), there was a town called Dawardan, whose inhabitants were afflicted with a plague. A majority of them fled and camped outside the town. Most of those who stayed behind perished. When the plague ended, all those who had fled returned to their town. A few survivors from among those who had remained behind said: "These people were more intelligent. If we had done as they did, we would all have survived. When the Plague comes again, we will all flee with them."
.
Later on, the plague struck them again and this time, they all fled together. Their number exceeded thirty-three thousand. They camped at the same place as they had done before, in the valley of Afeeh. One Angel from the bottom of the valley and another from the top called out to them saying: "All of you die." So they all died.
.
After a long time, Prophet named Hazqeel (as) passed by them. When he saw their state they were in, he stopped and began to ponder, twisting his fingers and jaws. Allah (ﷻ) revealed to him: "Do you want me to show you how I bring them back to life?"
He replied: "Yes"
He was told: "Call out to them."
He called, saying: "O bones, Allah orders you to come back together."
The bones started flying towards each other and became skeletons. Then Allah (ﷻ) ordered him to call: "O bones, Allah orders you to put on flesh."
They started putting on flesh and blood. Thereafter, they become clothed with the clothes in which they had died. Then, he was ordered to call them: "O bodies, Allah orders you to rise."
They all stood up.
.
Mansoor has reported that Mujahid said: When they came back to life, they said: "Glory be to you, O Allah. All praise is due to you. There is none worthy of worship except you."
Then, they returned to their people who knew that they had been dead before. After that, they lived their full lives, which had been written for them.
.
Imams Ahmad, Bukhari and Muslim reported on the authority of Ibn Abbas (ra) that one Caliph 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra) went to Syria. When he reached a place called Sargh, the commanders of the Muslim army, Abu Ubaydah (ra) and others, met him, and informed him that a plague had afflicted Syria. 'Umar then consulted the Companions, both the Muhajireen and Ansar (the Muslim citizens of Madina who gave refuge to the Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ) and the other Muslim emigrants from Makkah). They couldn't reach an agreement as to what to do next. Then came Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (ra), who had been away for some reason, and said: I have some knowledge about this issue.   I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say: "If a plague afflicts a place and you happen to be there, do not flee from it. However, if you hear about it afflicting another place, then don't enter it."
Umar (ra) praised Allah (ﷻ) and then went back.
.
Muhammed ibn Ishaq said: Nothing has been mentioned to us about how long Hazqeel (as) stayed among the children of Israel and how he died. However, after his death, the children of Israel forgot their covenant with Allah (ﷻ) and started worshipping idols. One of the idols which they worshipped was called Baal. Then Allah (ﷻ) sent to them Prophet Ilyas ibn Yaseen, ibn Fanhas ibn al-Eezar ibn Haroon ibn Imran.
